Hogansburg NYAugust 21, 2008 – By Tom Skibinski, DIRTcar Racing NorthEast PR Director

The Mr. DIRTcar 358-Modified Championship Series had not visited Hogansburg, New York since 2004. The track was known as Frogtown Int’l Speedway then and Mario Clair was a budding Small-Block star.

Four years later, Clair is still behind the wheel of the no. 22 Batiments JDL-sponsored machine. Yet on this occasion, the St-Edmond, Quebec speedster was able to usher in a new era with an overtime performance Thursday night in the Akwesasne 100 presented by Mohawk Bingo Palace and Casino at the recently renamed Mohawk International Raceway.

“This is my biggest win ever against some of the best cars around,” said Clair, who joined fellow Quebecois Steve Poirier, Kayle Robidoux and David Hebert as the only other Frenchman to a capture Super DIRTcar Series victory. Poirier claimed his memorable win during the 2002 edition of the Advance Auto Parts Super DIRTcar Series for Big-Blocks at Autodrome Drummond while Robidoux (Granby) and Hebert (Cornwall) claimed Small-Block victories last summer. Clair did become the first-ever driver from Quebec to take a checkered flag in Mr. DIRTcar tour competition on U.S. soil.

“The track was one lane tonight but very fast. I play it safe the first half of the race, then run my best the rest of the way. We’re happy to make the distance, it was a long race out there but we finally got first at the end,” remarked Clair, the reigning overall Hoosier Tire Mr. DIRTcar 358-Modified Champion who garnered the coveted crown without a win yet logged four top-five finishes in 13 starts.

Clair inherited the lead and ultimate victory when Brian McDonald suffered a broken right front shock on a lap 91 restart and the resulting pile-up forced out a red flag with 10 laps to go. Runner-up Danny Johnson and female phenom Jessica Zemken were the only other drivers to complete the distance while Billy Cook and rookie Larry Wight filled out the front five three laps down.

Mohawk regulars John Lazore and Delbert LeGrow led the 30-car starting grid to the initial green flag with LeGrow using the high side to his advantage to take the early lead. A mid-pack scramble on the opening circuit forced a complete restart although the pair was still able to out-distance themselves from Saturday night MIR racers Roy Tarbell and Carey Terrance with McDonald right behind.

Lazore slid high over the turn one berm and dropped back to fourth on lap eight yet the next time around tangled with Tarbell exiting turn four to initiate the second of a dozen caution periods that, along with a pair of red flags, would drop the average race speed to under 40 mph. Clair took advantage of the second slowdown to vault into third behind LeGrow and Terrance, with McDonald and ’07 Mr. DIRTcar 358 runner-up Danny O’Brien scored next.

McDonald charged forward to shadow LeGrow with 15 laps in the books and made quick work when the leader got boxed in behind the lapped car of Casey Swamp five circuits later. When Lance Willix slowed to incur yellow number four on lap 22, McDonald was chased by LeGrow and Terrance while Clair and O’Brien bided their time among the top-five.

Caution flags continued to fly as three more counted before the halfway mark, with the mounts of both Jeff Marshall and Todd Burley suffering flat right rear tires to force out the seventh yellow on lap 45. Tour traveler Chad Brachmann gave up seventh-place during this slowdown while McDonald and Clair battled up front as the field prepared for the lap 51 restart.

Yet just as the lead pack charged out of turn to resume action, the first major accident took place right in front of the grandstand with Terrance, LeGrow, O’Brien, Mitchell Jock and Brett Hearn absorbing the brunt of the multi-car melee. The first red was unfurled as track officials worked diligently trying to pry apart the open-wheel machines of Jock and O’Brien while Hearn and LeGrow were done for the night.

Cautions continued to keep the field in check and with 25 laps still remaining just five cars were scored on the lead lap while Terrance returned to fill in 10th still six laps down. Fifth-place runner Pete Bicknell slowed with a flat right rear tire leaving only McDonald, Clair, Johnson and Zemken to battle for supremacy, although the ensuing restart would further change the race complexion as half the field had retired pitside.

Just as McDonald picked up speed in turn four near the end of lap 90, his shock broke forcing the front end to dig in and send the trailing pack swerving on both sides to avoid the mishap. While McDonald’s West Front Construction no. 151kb East End Auto Parts/Troyer entry coasted to a stop on the main straightaway, the no. 27 machine of Roy Delormier slammed in, tearing off the entire left side back to the fuel cell on McDonald’s car, with Delormier staging a wild series of flips that ended in a heap of sheet metal just shy of turn one. Frenchman Michel Chicoine and Tarbell were also involved in the incident that prompted the second red flag of the night.

The final 10 circuits clicked off caution-free with Clair powering out to nearly a straightaway lead over Johnson, as Zemken crossed the line almost a second and a half later. Johnson was rewarded with a guaranteed starting berth in the Syracuse 358-Modified Championship during Super DIRT Week at the New York State Fairgrounds on October 11 while fourth-place finisher Cook was recognized as the Bert Hard Charger.

But in the end during the customary post-race inspection, a carburetor infraction was determined with the Clair car and the team was penalized full points and fined full earnings, dampening the spirits of the newest Canadian tour winner. The Clair team announced in the aftermath that it will appeal the ruling, with more details forthcoming as they are released.

“We had a real fast hot rod tonight, glad it was able to stick it out for the distance,” said Johnson, who just days earlier was in touch with car owner Perry Francis before securing the ride on Thursday night. After suffering mechanical issues last Sunday in the Advance Series show at Cornwall Motor Speedway, Johnson was close to climbing in Francis’ C&B Boating Enterprise no. 55 Action Race Parts/TEO ride for the first time that night until Francis qualified and Johnson made repairs in Zach Aubertine’s black no. 11 TEO car.

“The track was really rough, I guess just to survive and finish is quite an accomplishment tonight. I have to thank Perry for letting me drive while he’s out of town. Right now, I’m on a day-to-day schedule finding a ride,” Johnson added.

While Clair made history with his first 358-Modified tour triumph, Zemken pulled out a page of her own becoming the highest finishing female ever in DIRTcar Racing NorthEast’s premier series for Small-Block racers as she drove Don Thompson’s Street Wise Fight Wear no. 19z Thompson Motorsports/TEO to a solid third-place showing.

“I have to thank Don for giving me this opportunity,” said Zemken, who may be a Mohawk regular next year as her aunt lives in nearby Massena, New York and Thompson has already found success with ‘Pumpkin’ behind the wheel. “Right now, we’re getting better and better every race and plan to follow the rest of the series if we keep doing well. Tonight we held back in such a long race, there was definitely a lot going on out there. We’re certainly happy to come home third, best of all in one piece.”

The rate of attrition proved costly for early season Mr. DIRTcar 358 point leader Dale Planck, who borrowed a ride only to run 48 laps and finish 23rd. Todd Burley buckled into Mitchell Jock’s back-up no. 14 TEO machine to last 95 laps and grab eighth at the line and as a results overtook Planck atop the standings through three of 13 scheduled events.

Teams chasing points towards the overall Mr. DIRTcar 358-Modified Championship Series return to action across the border when Cornwall (Ont.) Motor Speedway stages round number four of the 2008 tour on Sunday, August 31.

SKIDMARKS
The former Frogtown Int’l Speedway emerged as the new Mohawk Int’l Raceway in March during the 20th annual track banquet yet the 2008 race season is the just the beginning of a three-year plan to completely renovate the facility that first opened to the public in August of 1987. The Hogansburg, New York hangout has been affiliated with DIRTcar Racing since 1988 and in 2009 the best is yet to come.

“We’ve already built a state-of-the-art washroom that features an adjoining shower facility and security office,” revealed MIR Board of Directors member Don Thompson. “In phase one this year we’ve also upgraded our equipment with the addition of two packer vehicles and a new grader. As soon as the season ends in September we’ll get our major renovation project underway. We wanted to do more this year but in order to do things right we’ve outlined a three-year project.”

Added fellow MIR board member John Lazore, also a weekly racer at his facility, “The Monday after our last race we’ll begin tearing down the main grandstands and replace the old boards with aluminum seating. We hold about 1,500 now but the new better seats will accommodate just about as many and we’re looking to accommodate close to 2,000 in the future. Racers will notice a big difference we’ll be extending the pits a couple hundred feet back and raising it 2-3 feet from the ground up with new drainage going in. The haulers will enter behind the grandstands and once inside teams will find a two-stall tech building. New stadium (Musco) lighting will also be in place to give everyone the best view possible. The final stage will include improvements to the parking lot with space for RVs and a picnic area on the drawing board.”

POT HOLES: A solid field of 36 racers signed in for the inaugural Akwesasne 100, including more than a dozen in their first tour effort of the season. Included in the list were 2006 Mr. DIRTcar 358 champ Brett Hearn, DIRT Hall of Famer Dave Heaslip and 15 year-old Dexter Stacey, son of Wallace Stacey, owner of cars still driven today by DIRTcar veteran Alan Johnson…..A trio of Small-Block rookies qualified for the feature go with Larry Wight (5th), Mitchell Jock (9th) and Tommy Flannigan (22nd) making the grade…..Second-generation racer Tim O’Brien was competing for the first time at MIR, although brothers Pat (1989 & ’92 track champ) and Danny have 34 DIRTcar 358-Modified feature wins between them at the track…..Ryan Jacobs, a former owner of cars driven by Dale Planck, back behind the wheel of a Modified after a short jaunt in a sprint car. Mechanical problems with the Carey Terrance-owned no. 66 driven by Planck this year in the 358 Series forced Dale to pick up a ride in Clement Therrien’s no. 39 Carrosserie St-Calixte Racing-JT Rerrassement/Bicknell entry for the feature…..While Jessica Zemken recorded the highest finish for a female on the Super DIRTcar Series, the Sprakers, New York pilot also posted the second fastest lap in time trails to rank as the best-ever for her gender.
