Dave Marcuccilli took advantage of a front row starting position he earned with a victory during the Cayuga County Fair, grabbing the lead on the opening lap of the Hoosier Tire-VP Racing Fuels Mr DIRTcar Sportsman Series All-Star 30 and never looking back. For the Cayuga, N.Y. driver it was his first ever Series win and third in a row at the Weedsport oval.
“I just can’t believe this, I don’t know what to say,” beamed an excited Marcuccilli after exiting his no. m1 Barbay & Son Construction-Crew Boyz Racing-Stormin/Bicknell machine. “We haven’t changed a thing in this car, all we’ve done is give it a wash and provide some basic maintenance.”
Marcuccilli out-dragged defending race winner Justin Wright and the rest of the 31-car starting field to lead the early laps. He built up a half straightaway lead until a seven-car tangle in turn four brought out the first caution period of the race.
With 10 laps showing on the scoreboard, Marcuccilli had built up a five car-length advantage over Wright who ran alone in second. Two-time reigning Mr. DIRTcar points king Chris Raabe, Cornwall Speedway series winner Tim Sears Jr. and current Cayuga Co. points leader Steve Gray were in a tight battle for top-five positions.
At the halfway mark Marcuccilli was still out running Wright, Sears, Raabe and Gray. Suddenly, going into turn one Raabe spun all by himself to bring out the yellow and he was able to continue at the tail end of the field.
On lap 22 Sears moved into second and took off after the leader, who had now built up a two-second lead over the field.
Former CCFS champion Jeremy Pitcher looped his Troyer entry in turn one on lap 27 to bring out the final caution flag and erase the seemingly insurmountable lead that Marcuccilli had built up.
Over the final laps Sears could pull even with Marcuccilli in turns three and four. Yet Marcuccilli never flinched as he held his line to be the first under the checkers by a car-length over the second-generation pilot from Clay, N.Y., finishing in front of Gray, Ryan Susice and Wright followed by Jipp Ortiz, Mark Chiddy, Matt Hulsizer, Jesse Cotriss and Eric Giguere among the Top-10.
“We started up front and that helped a lot. I just couldn’t believe how good this car was even though we were still a little loose. You had to stay towards the bottom in one and two tonight, three and four I just kind of ran the middle and exited four off the bottom as it had good drive off,” added Marcuccilli, who remains just a one night a week racer.
The Mr. DIRTcar Sportsman Series has nearly two months off before getting back on track for rounds number four, five and six at Ransomville Speedway, Merrittville Speedway and Humberstone Speedway, Sept. 10-12.
