Veteran wins first UNOH DIRTcar Nationals Presented by Summit feature since 2007<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

BARBERVILLE, Fla. \u2014 Feb. 23, 2012 \u2014 Thursday was a dominant night for Danny Johnson; it just took a little longer to get over than he wanted.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt seemed like a long race for me,\u201d he said with a grin. \u201cWhen you\u2019re leading a race it seems like it takes forever to get over with. But when you\u2019re in the back going to the front it seems like 30 laps goes in a hurry.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The veteran from Rochester, N.Y., led all 30 laps to claim the Super DIRTcar Series Big-Block Modifieds opener at the 41st<\/sup> annual UNOH DIRTcar Nationals Presented by Summit Racing Equipment at Volusia Speedway Park.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The dominant performance began in qualifying when Johnson was not only the quickest in his session, which earned him the pole for his heat race, but he was the fastest overall with a top lap of 17.441 seconds.<\/p>\n

Johnson then led all eight laps to win his heat \u2013 the second on the track \u2013 which started him on the outside of the front row for the feature that was aligned heads up.<\/p>\n

\u201cNight and day difference,\u201d Johnson said. \u201cI put a lot of tearoffs on my helmet just in case I didn\u2019t get the lead, but I didn\u2019t have to use all my tearoffs and didn\u2019t get any mud in the car.\u201d<\/p>\n

That\u2019s because Johnson took the lead on the initial lap from polesitter Tim Fuller and never looked back. He maintained the high groove throughout the race and chose the outside line on each of the eight cautions that dramatically slowed the race.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cIt was very fast up there,\u201d Johnson said. \u201cWhen you have a cushion on a rainout like this, you put the right rear tire up on that cushion and the car is like on a rail all around the race track. It\u2019s hard to beat a cushion when there\u2019s a cushion.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Fuller finished second with Alan Johnson in third. Matt Sheppard charged from 15th<\/sup> to place fourth and Jimmy Horton was fifth. Michael Storms, Mario Clair, Rich Scagliotta, Rich Laubach and Stewart Friesen rounded out the top 10, respectively.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Laubach and Friesen each brought out a caution in a race that didn\u2019t go longer than seven laps without a yellow or red flag. With Wednesday\u2019s UNOH DIRTcar Nationals Presented by Summit being washed out and scattered showers throughout early Thursday, the track stayed very fast throughout the night. In fact, Johnson posted the quickest time in the feature, which was 0.15 faster than his qualifying time and was an average speed of more than 104 miles per hour.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cThe rainout from last night and the rain from today with no sun today made it extremely fast,\u201d he said. \u201cIt was a little rough because the track wasn\u2019t wide. I could pretty much hold it wide open all the way around. With a big-block modified, that\u2019s a lot of power getting to the race track.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The victory was Johnson\u2019s first at Volusia Speedway Park since Feb. 17, 2007, and was his 12th<\/sup> career big-block modifieds win in Florida \u2013 second only to Brett Hearn, who finished 11th<\/sup> Thursday after sustaining a flat left rear tire while running second on lap 18.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Polesitters Fuller, Johnson and Alan Johnson, and Storms, who started outside the front row, each claimed a heat race victory.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Scagliotta and Brian Truppi both won a Last Chance Showdown.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The competitors will return to Volusia Speedway Park for a doubleheader tomorrow \u2013 Friday \u2013 beginning with Wednesday\u2019s rained out program in the afternoon. The front gate opens at 11 a.m. with racing shortly after and the night event will follow as regularly scheduled.<\/p>\n
