Cornwall, ONT — September 5, 2010 – By Martin Belanger, Cornwall Motor Speedway PR

Some cooler temperature greeted the fans and race teams for the third race of the Hoosier Tire-VP Racing Fuels Mr. DIRTcar 358-Modified Series at Cornwall Motor Speedway. Another banner field of 40 cars signed up to compete in the ‘Jiffy 100’ 100-lap feature event. Danny O’Brien left Cornwall with $4,000 more in his pockets after another heated battle with his older brother Pat and Danny Johnson on the quarter-mile bullring.

Current Mr. DIRTcar 358-Modified series points leader Danny Johnson was on the pole along with Kayle Robidoux on the front row of the 31-car starting field for the ‘Jiffy 100.’ Johnson grabbed the early lead over Robidoux and Jeremy Wilder in third spot.

Tommy Flannigan brought the first caution on lap 4. The caution counted from lap 1 to lap 75. David Hébert had already picked up 5 spots as he cracked the top 10. The green lights came back on lap 8 with Johnson ahead. Danny O’Brien took third over Wilder on that restart with older brother Pat rounding out the top 5 with 10 laps in the books.

Pat O’Brien took fourth spot while Danny passed Robidoux for second as the caution came out on lap 13. Robidoux had issues and headed to the pits on that same caution losing his third spot. Johnson had a stong start over O’Brien as an accident occurred in the backstretch involving Laurent Ladouceur and Bobby Herrington, both cars headed to the pits on lap 17.

The feature came back at full speed on lap 23 with ‘’The Doctor’’ still in front with Joel Doiron making a charge for third but got back to fifth while Erick Rudolph had a strong run in fourth. Danny O’Brien passed Johnson for the lead on lap 26 with a bold move inside of turn 2. Pat O’Brien used the inside lane to do the same thing to Johnson 3 laps later.

Chad Brachmann brought the caution on lap 32. The O’Brien brothers on the top row with Danny having a strong start over Pat on lap 36. ‘’The Pocket Rocket’’ built himself a sizeable lead over Pat with 43 laps down. The leaders caught heavy traffic on lap 46.

At the halfway point, Danny O’Brien was the leader over Pat O’Brien, Danny Johnson, Erick Rudolph and Lee Ladouceur. Stéphane Lafrance had a flat tire and the field was brought together on lap 53. Danny O’Brien was still the leader over Pat as David Hébert cracked the top 5 with 35 laps to go. Mario Clair was strong on the outside and took fifth of Hébert on lap 66 and then worked his way to Rudolph for fourth and they ran side by side for a few laps.

The O’Briens were back in heavy traffic with 73 laps done. Pat was able to gain ground on his younger brother in those conditions. Matt Williamson caused the yellow as he stopped in the backstretch with 79 laps on the scoring board. O’Brien stayed first on the following green but caution was back one lap later as Robidoux and Luke Whitteker got together. The O’Brien brothers stayed in the top 2 spots with Johnson, Rudolph and Clair racing hard for positions 3 to 5.

Clair was able to pass Rudolph for fourth and was now challenging Johnson with 15 to go. Clair made several charges on the outside lane to try and take third with 90 laps in the record books as the leaders were involved again with slower cars. Danny O’Brien was really fast in the traffic and was getting away from Pat and Johnson. The Kingston driver led the final laps to capture his first win of the year in the Mr. DIRTcar 358-Modified series over his brother Pat, Danny Johnson, Mario Clair and Erick Rudolph rounded out the top 5. Rich Rickner collected the special hard-charger award presented by the David family in honour of Mitch Jock.

Danny O’Brien was pretty happy after collecting a popular win. “We struggled early in the year and I hope it`s a sign of good things to come’’. He commented on his brother finishing second: ‘’It`s good to have a top 2 finish in the family, as we had clean racing all around the track’’. Pat O’Brien was happy for his brother: ‘’I’m happy for Danny, he struggled earlier on this year and I had nothing for him tonight as I was looser than him in the corner’’. Making a house call in Cornwall, ‘’The Doctor’’ Danny Johnson was pleased with his 3rd place finish: ‘’I’m ecstatic! I am really happy to get third behind these two great drivers,’’ noted Johnson who had a left front flat tire for the last 50 laps.

The Series stays in Canada as the drivers will head to ‘’La belle Province’’ next Friday at Autodrome Granby for a 150-lap feature event paying $10,000 to the winner. Autodrome Drummond will also host a special 160-lap event the following night with also $10,000 to win. With the Super DIRTcar Big-Block Series having a week-end off, this will attract some big names down in Quebec.

Pit Notes
Nine of the Top-10 cars in the Mr. DIRTcar 358-Modified points chase showed up at Cornwall with Series leader Danny Johnson making the haul from Rochester, N.Y. With Autodrome Granby and Autodrome Drummond hosting back-to-back $10,000-to-win shows next weekend in Eastern Quebec, several drivers from that area made the drive to Ron Morin`s beautiful facility including Mario Clair and David Hébert that were in the top 5 before tonight`s event. A total of 14 new drivers registered for their first Mr. DIRTcar Series event.
