For the 10th time, the “Steel Palace” has been converted into the “Clay Palace” to welcome hundreds of race car drivers and thousands of fans for Super DIRT Week 54 presented by StubHub (Oct. 5-10).
More than 500 truckloads of clay were placed around the 5/8-mile track, in a process again spearheaded by longtime Super DIRT Week supporter and local track promoter John Wight and his team. Three trucks, two bulldozers, and one excavator were utilized for the process. Local racing talent stepped in to help with the process again, as 358 Modified driver Tim Harris piloted the excavator and Big Block Modified driver Tim Sears Jr. ran one of the bulldozers.
However, the process of converting Oswego Speedway into the home for Super DIRT Week started long before the dirt went down. In the week prior, concrete barriers were placed around the track, trailers and containers were parked to be used as ticket booths and merch stands, walls were painted, seats were fixed, and many more projects were completed to get the speedway ready to accommodate 1,000 campers and 30,000 fans throughout the week.
Everything kicks off on Sunday, Oct. 4, with early load-in for campers and race teams in the morning before the annual Kickoff Party at Lighthouse Lanes, starting at 6 p.m. That leads into weeklong activities, culminating with the $54,000-to-win, 200-lap, Super DIRTcar Series Billy Whittaker Cars 200 under the lights on Saturday, Oct. 10.
