Cornwall, ONT — September 6, 2009 – By Martin Belanger, Cornwall Motor Speedway PR
The best Small-Block drivers gathered at Cornwall Motor Speedway for the third race of the 2009 Hoosier Tire-VP Racing Fuels Mr. DIRTcar 358-Modified Series with a stellar field of 48 cars signing up to try and qualify for the 100-lap event paying a cool $4,000. At the end of the night, Carey Terrance was recognized as the best driver of the field.
Laurent Ladouceur and Terrance were at the lead of the 34-car field a the drop of the opening green flag. Ladouceur took the early lead but Terrance passed him using the outside lane on lap two with David Hébert sitting in third. Hébert took second on Ladouceur the next lap and moved in to chase the leader.
The leaders reached traffic with 10 laps scored while Ladouceur and Tim O’Brien battled further back for third with 15 laps in the books. Hébert got closer to Terrance as they diced for the top spot in heavy traffic while Pete Bicknell and O’Brien swapped fifth with 80 laps left in the feature.
Series points leader Dale Planck seemed to be the fastest car on the track as he cracked the top-15 as the race reached the 25-lap mark after starting last on the 34-car grid. Hébert continued on the back bumper of Terrance for the lead with both racing side by side, lap after lap.
The first caution came out on lap 34 for Tommy Flannigan who had stopped in turn one. On the restart, Hébert took over the lead from Terrance with Pat O’Brien trying to move past Ladouceur for third. O’Brien was able to take away the show position from Ladouceur on lap 36 as Hébert continued to hold a comfortable lead over Terrance with 40 laps done.
Frenchman Mario Clair brought the second yellow of the feature on lap 45 and headed to the pits. Terrance took back the top spot over Hébert when the green lights came back as Tim O’Brien was now third making great moves on that same restart. Yan Bussière slowed on the backstretch and another caution came out on lap 49 although Terrance kept the lead over Hébert as the race reached the halfway mark.
The top-five was Terrance, Hébert, Tim O’Brien, Ladouceur and Bicknell with 50 laps complete, yet three laps later Planck cracked the front-five as he passed Bicknell on lap 53. Planck was really fast on the outside lane and took third over from O’Brien on lap 57.
The leaders crept up to some slower cars when Bobby Herrington and Jean Boissonneault got together in turn four on lap 64. The race re-started on lap 68 with Terrance still the leader followed closest by Hébert and Planck. Hébert was trying hard to pass Terrance for the lead for several laps but the leader was able to resist.
In the meantime, Planck was trying to take second on Hébert as the O’Brien brothers were now fourth with Tim, fifth for Pat and sixth for Danny with 20 laps to go. Kyle Dingwall spun out in turn four and caution came out on lap 81.
The green lights were back out on lap 86 with the top-three remaining the same, Terrance and Hébert battled side by side with only 10 laps to go as Terrance held a slight advantage over Hébert. Planck closed in on Hébert on lap 95 while Hébert tried for first but Terrance closed the door.
Planck remained strong on the outside taking second when caution came out with only two laps to go forcing the feature to finish under green-white-checker conditions. Terrance got a good start with Planck on top but Terrance was able to resist by a scant 0.002-second margin ahead of Hébert, Danny O’Brien and Tim O’Brien among the top-five.
“That was an awesome race,” was the first comment from Terrance in victory lane. “I ran the bottom, that was a good lane for me all night. It’s always nice to race against these drivers, it was always clean.”
Second-place runner Planck was also pleased for his teammate Terrance. “Carey and I are a team and the last caution hurt me but the track was great and I’m happy with second.”
French speaking David Hébert also commented on his race. “I tried running on top but my car was going better at the bottom. Dale and Carey are pretty strong here, I’m happy that I won the Canadian DIRT Series.”
The series stays north next week with a three-night weekend with visits at the revamped Mohawk International Raceway located in Hogansburg, NY on Friday, September 11, Brockville Ontario Speedway on the 12th and the series will then head to Quebec at Autodrome Granby on Sept. 13 for a 150-lap feature event paying $10,000 to the winner.
