The Decker Captures Mr. DIRTcar 358-Modified ‘Xtreme Lubricants 75’ Friday At Rolling Wheelsfor reigning Hoosier Tire-VP Racing Fuels Mr. DIRTcar Big-Block Champion Billy Decker as he captured his second 358-Modified Series win in two weeks.
Decker won the ‘GMCI Express 150’ at Autodrome Granby on Sept. 13 then finished dead-last the next weekend in ‘Race Mania 5’ at Autodrome Drummond, before leading all but the initial circuit to dominate the Xtreme Lubricants 75 which was his third tour triumph at Rolling Wheels.
“The Gypsum car was pretty doggone good tonight, I can’t thank all the guys on the crew for putting all their time in to make it right,” remarked Decker, 44, following his ninth career series win, this one worth $3,000 for the LJL Motorsports Team and the no. 91 Gypsum Wholesalers-Stadium Int’l-Quality Hardwoods/Bicknell squad. “Everybody did a great job, we’re all just having a lot of fun right now.”
Decker staved off a late race rally by runner-up Matt Sheppard and clung to a two car-length victory under the checkers, while Alan Johnson, Ronnie Johnson (no relation) and Chad Brachmann filled in front-five spots at the stripe.
Leading off the 23rd edition of World Series Weekend at the ‘Fast Track,’ Sheppard turned the fast time in trials with a one-lap best clocking of 20.502 seconds (109.745 mph). The second-generation driver from Waterloo, N.Y. then went out and picked up a guaranteed starting position in the 358-Modified Championship scheduled for October 10 of Super DIRT Week XXXVIII at the NYS Fairgrounds as Decker had earned his just two weekends earlier.
While Sheppard re-drew seventh to start inside row four on the feature race grid, Decker selected three to fit in two rows up and from there needed only one time around to track down opening lap leader Todd Burley. Despite a half-dozen caution flags falling to slow the action for 15 laps, the driver from Unadilla, N.Y. set it on cruise control until Sheppard reeled him over the last 10 circuits.
“I got a little bit loose at the end and you just can’t roll over at all with Matt this year, he’ll be all over you,” added Decker, who remains among the hottest drivers on the Super DIRTcar Series for Big-Blocks after posting two of his four extra-distance victories this season during the past month. “He’s having a good year that’s for sure. Hopefully, the weather holds out (tomorrow), it should be another great night of racing and I’m really looking forward to it. I’m pretty sure Matt is too and he’ll probably be right up there again at the end as well.”
With Decker holding a comfortable lead for most of the race, Sheppard methodically worked his was to the front with a mixture of patience and finesse around the smooth 5/8-miler. The Waterloo, N.Y. pilot moved into fourth with 10 laps complete, bolted high past third-place runner Jimmy Phelps down the frontstretch at the end of a dozen laps, then slid past runner-up Johnson and set his sights on Decker with two-thirds of the race in the books.
Yet that’s as far as the second-generation standout could advance despite pulling up to Decker’s rear bumper as the leaders diced through heavy traffic with just five laps to go.
“I thought I had a shot at Billy, just got up a little too high in turn two there,” noted Sheppard, 27, who was in search of his fourth career 358-Mod Series victory on his Big-Block car owner’s night. Xtreme Lubricants distributer Jeff Brownell was in attendance while ‘Super Matt’ steered Tom Cullen’s yellow no. 1 Westmoreland Golf Club-Fairway Farms/Bicknell mount on Friday getting plenty of track in preparation for Saturday’s ‘World Series 100’ finale at the ‘Fast Track.’
“If I could’ve stayed next to him getting into (turn) three I think I could’ve gotten him, but he was awful fast tonight. I ran this thing just about as hard as I can possibly run it, that’s all I could do to stay with him so hats off to him.”
“We had a good car, maybe if we would’ve started in front of him it would have been a little different. Still, I have to thank Tom, he gave me a great car to drive and it was a lot of fun,” added Sheppard, who like Decker, had less than 24 hours to prepare for the second day of open-wheel competition during World Series Weekend ’09 at the popular Elbridge oval.
Starting sixth in the feature race field of 30 cars on Friday night, Johnson climbed to as high as second with just 10 laps in the books before relinquishing the spot to Sheppard with 25 to go and the top-three positions remaining uncontested the rest of the way.
“It’s a great car, it’s just the guy who owns it is too honest,” quipped Johnson, 51, on this night securing ‘The Deuce’ of veteran racer Deek Decker. Ironically, in the customary post-race inspection, the Mr. Deek’s Racing Team was penalized half its third-place earnings for a minor ignition system violation in the TEO machine. “I just can’t thank Deek enough for giving me this ride, it’s a real good one.”
Rounding out the Top-10 in the final run down were Jimmy Phelps, Canadian invaders Pete Bicknell, Danny O’Brien, Frenchman Mario Clair and Larry Lampman Jr., while tour rookie Jeremy Wilder and recently crowned Mohawk Int’l Raceway points champion Roy Tarbell were the last to complete the entire 75-lap distance.
Racing in the Mr. DIRTcar 358-Modified Championship Series takes a brief break before returning for four consecutive nights of extra-distance activity during the annual Super DIRT Week extravaganza in the Salt City. Can-Am Motorsports Park kicks off the rare quadrupleheader on Wednesday, October 7 followed by successive shows at Brewerton Speedway (Oct. 8) and Rolling Wheels (Oct. 9) before closing out with the headline 150-lap Mr. DIRTcar 358-Modified Series Championship race on the Syracuse Mile on Saturday.

POT HOLES: Alan Johnson back aboard for the ’09 debut of Deek Decker’s famed ‘Deuce’ entry housing a brand new Morrison powerplant. The Johnson/Decker combination will reunite in less than two weeks for successive Super DIRT Week satellite events at Can-Am (Oct. 7), Brewerton (Oct. 8) and Rolling Wheels (Oct. 9). The last time ‘A.J. Slideways’ buckled into the Mr. Deek’s Racing TEO Pro Car was in October of ’07, finishing 7th at Brewerton and 6th at Rolling Wheels in the SDW specials.…The Chrysler brothers, Randy and Roger, set for double duty over the weekend at RWR. Younger sibling Randy, the 2002 Mr. DIRTcar Sportsman titlist, had his Bicknell Big-Block entry stowed away in his trailer while Roger hauled in just one car and was prepared to swap engines overnight in his attempt to qualify for the ‘World Series 100’ on Saturday.…Mohawk Int’l Raceway co-owner —with Don Thompson Jr.— John Lazore combed the pits on Friday already planning ahead for 2010. Along with resurfacing MIR, building a VIP Booth in the pits and placing new billboards around the track during the off-season, Lazore confirmed the addition of 90-feet (800 pers.) more of grandstand seating bringing the total capacity to 3,000 for the frontstretch structure; all this in hopes of landing Super DIRTcar Series Big-Block Modified and World of Outlaws Late Model Series shows for next season, his third at the helm….Tim Fuller was a half lap from victory in the consolation round when the muffler blew apart in the borrowed n. 99 Adderley Motorsports/TEO machine, relegating him to sixth-place on the final scoresheet as he limped across the finish line. The mechanical ills could not be remedied in time for the feature as the Edwards, N.Y. driver was listed last in the finish after circling RWR just six times in the nightcap….Challenging night for the top-two point earners in the overall Hoosier Tire-VP Racing Fuels Mr. DIRTcar 358 points chase, as leader Dale Planck settled for 14th-place, one lap down to the leaders, while runner-up and defending Mr. DIRTcar Champion Pete Bicknell held on for seventh at the line after improving from a 16th starting slot….Four-time Mr. DIRTcar 358-Modified Champion Pat O’Brien was the lone guaranteed starter unable to take the green after engine failure curtailed his best efforts even before he could hit the track for time trials.
