After three series victories, six times in the top five, and eight top-ten finishes Dale Plank took the DIRTcar 358-Modified Series Championship.
Finishing third behind greats Brett Hearn and Danny Johnson at Cornwall Motor Speedway’s May season opener, Planck’s small block season was off to a good start. He fell back to a 13th-place finish at Merrittville Speedway, allowing Hearn to take the win. Billy Dunn, of Watertown, N. Y., fired to victory at his home track, Mohawk International Raceway in June, but Planck finished in a close second. Johnson took the win July 3 for “The Battle at the Border” at Ransomville Speedway.
Planck went on from Ransomville to take victory twice in a row – first at Cornwall Motor Speedway Sept. 2 and next at Autodrome Granby Sept. 7.
When the series again visited Mohawk International Raceway, Dunn won again, but Planck’s fourth-place finish kept him going strong in points. Mario Clair found victory at Brighton Speedway, the last series race before NAPA Auto Parts Super DIRT Week XLI.
In NAPA Auto Parts Super DIRT Week XLI satellite events, Tim McCreadie took the win Oct. 3 at Cayuga County Fair Speedway and Brett Hearn was victorious Oct. 4 at Rolling Wheels Raceway Park. McCreadie again drove a fast small block that Saturday, Oct. 6, all the way to victory lane for the Gander Mountain 150. Planck finished at a strong eighth on “the Moody Mile.”
Finishing second to Johnson at Brighton Ontario Speedway series finale, Planck took the 2012 358-Modified Series crown.
In the inaugural year of the DIRTcar 358-Modified Asphalt Series, a 3-race series running small block modifieds on asphalt tracks, Todd Stone took the opener at Airborne Speedway Park, but Pat McGrail charged ahead to win the next two events, the second at Dunn Tire Raceway Park and the finale at Airborne, to take the title.
