First-ever DIRTcar 358-Modified Asphalt Series kicks off June 20
PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. — June 8, 2012 — DIRTcar 358-Modifieds take to asphalt at Airborne Park Speedway Wednesday, June 20, for a series opener featuring a unique racing style.
“It’s different, you know. It’s exciting,” promoter Mike Perrotte said of the series, which involves the regulations similar to the original DIRTcar 358-Modified dirt track series, but with the added challenge of an asphalt surface.
Perrotte started running 358-Modified races at Airborne’s half-mile asphalt oval in 2005, inspired by his time driving for a series that ran purpose-built dirt cars on asphalt tracks in the 1980s and ’90s. Since then, the popularity of the 358-Modified car type in the region combined with the way the cars drive have made for successful and interesting races.
“They’re a little bit out of control, which is abnormal for asphalt races,” Perrotte said. “There’s more passing, more side-by-side racing than a typical asphalt race.”
For the 2012 season, the concept has grown into its own four-race DIRTcar 358-Modified series. Returning to its roots for the first event, the Della Motorsports 75 presented by Northline Utilities & Haley Lumber, the series kicks off Wednesday, June 20, with a 75-lap feature at Airborne Park Speedway. Gates open at 4 p.m. and post time is 6 p.m.
The second round of DIRTcar 358-Modified Asphalt action follows closely with a 50-lap event Tuesday, June 26, at Dunn Tire Raceway Park’s five-eighths-mile track.
