Serenity Sutherland joins winning racers Gloria Katona Scarpati and Jessica Zemken as a co-recipient of the eighth annual Gater Racing News “Outstanding Woman in Racing” award during the 2009 Northeast Modified Hall of Fame ceremonies Sunday, May 24 on the Cayuga County Fairgrounds held in conjunction with the annual Memorial Day Weekend holiday show at the adjacent speedway.
Miss Sutherland, a native of Dundee, New York, became the first-ever female driver to win a Modified feature at Black Rock Speedway on May 23, 2008. She led flag-to-flag in dominating style to cop the 25-lap main event in her hometown and with her history-making victory became the first Dundee resident in 22 years to win in the Modified ranks at the Yates County oval.
Serenity hails from a racing family. Her dad Cameron is a former driver and serves as her crew chief. Her brother Trevor Sutherland also runs in the Small-Block division and her cousin Quinn Sutherland is a Late Model hotshoe who follows the BRP circuit.
Now owning 12 years of motorsports experience, Sutherland could well be considered a racing veteran. Along with becoming the first woman to win a Modified feature at Black Rock, she remains one of the only female Small-Block competitors in the entire state.
Serenity was born and raised in the Finger Lakes Region and aside from briefly leaving to earn her bachelors degree in History and Creative Writing from SUNY Binghamton, she has spent her entire life there. She now resides with her husband in Western New York where she is working full-time and attending the Rochester Institute of Technology in pursuit of a masters degree in Environmental Management.
Prior to moving up to the 358-Mods, Serenity was a winning chauffeur in Black Rock’s Pro Truck division. She was recognized in 2008 by the Cayuga Radio Group as one of the area’s ‘Top 20 Outstanding Women You Should Know.’ In 2007, Serenity was awarded the “Up-And-Comer Award” twice for having the highest finish for a winless driver in that class at Black Rock.
For 2009, Serenity, age 24, has changed her hometrack after relocating to the Rochester suburb of Fairport last August. She now runs her no. 37 Cam Sutherland & Son Construction-Finger Lakes NAPA Troyer Small-Block entry regularly on Fridays at the Redline Raceway in Northern Pennsylvania.
