Weedsport Speedway’s ‘Hall of Fame 100’ features $10,000-to-win Big-Block Modified Race

Hall of Fame induction Wednesday, Aug. 6, followed by Super DIRTcar Series race Thursday, Aug. 7, part of a historic week in Weedsport

WEEDSPORT, N.Y. — August 2, 2014 — It’s history in the making next week at the newly refurbished Weedsport Speedway. The classic Super DIRTcar Series Hall of Fame race returns to its roots at 1 Speedway Drive for two days celebrating racing history.

The annual DIRTcar Hall of Fame induction ceremony kicks off the celebration Wednesday, Aug. 6, at 7 p.m., exonerating the careers of Lloyd Holt, Charlie Rudolph, and Mike Colsten, among others. The mighty Big Block Modifieds hit the track the following day for the Hall of Fame 100, the first Super DIRTcar Series race at Weedsport since July 2011.

“We think it’s going to be a great event and a great week,” said Modified racer Jimmy Phelps, who has also been instrumental in event management and promotion at Weedsport Speedway. “The August 7 Hall of Fame 100 is probably the keynote on our schedule. To be able to bring the Super DIRTcar Series back to where it started means a ton to us.”

Weedsport Speedway’s new owners are so excited for the return of the Super DIRTcar Series that they have decided to raise the stakes. Thursday’s ‘Hall of Fame 100’ will pay $500 to start and $10,000 to win, boasting an impressive total purse of $37,350.

Those fans not in attendance at the Sunday, July 27, Sportsman Classic at Weedsport Speedway may find a welcome surprise next week. The modernized facility features updated grandstands, a new tower and even some changes in concessions.

“We’re looking forward to having a facility that’s real comfortable for the fans,” Phelps said. “The excitement level, whether it be from the racing community or from the local community, has been wonderful.”

Phelps said the Weedsport Speedway team is looking forward to coordinating next week’s racing with the annual Hall of Fame induction ceremony, and is happy to to see the museum, a landmark for local racing, grow in influence.

“The Hall of Fame is an organization that is getting some legs again, and I think there are some good things in the future,” Phelps said. “I think as we’ve reenergized the place, and we’ve been working around there and things are starting to happen, it’s starting to really draw some attention back.”

At the induction ceremony, which is set to begin at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 6, three of racing’s best will unveil their newly added portraits in the Hall of Fame. Lloyd Holt, once a regular at Waterloo Maple Grove Speedway, Charlie Rudolph, who ranks among the top 40 in Big Block Modified wins, and Mike Colsten, a famed Late Model racer, will be honored for their racing careers. Additionally, the Gene DeWitt Owner’s Award, Mechanic Award and Gate Racing News “Women in Racing” Award will be presented to motorsports notables.

The “Hall of Fame” race night takes over the Weedsport property Thursday, Aug. 7, for a $10,000-to-win, 100-lap feature for the Super DIRTcar Big Block Modified Series as well as full nights for Sportsman Modifieds and the Midstate Antique Stock Car Club. Pit gates open at 4 p.m. and grandstand gates open at 5 p.m. with racing scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. For more information about the Super DIRTcar Series, visit www.superdirtcarseries.com.
