The Super DIRTcar Series returns to action for its 2010 Big-Block Modified finale as part of the 4th edition of the Lowes Foods World Finals Presented By Bimbo Bakeries and Tom’s Snacks at The Dirt Track at Charlotte, Nov. 4-6. Three straight days of trackside activity lead off Thursday with qualifying heats then continue Friday and Saturday with back-to-back 40-lap main events each paying $6,000 to win. Valuable points are on the line towards the overall Hoosier Tire-VP Racing Fuels Mr. DIRTcar Big-Block Modified Championship using the 150-points schedule, with the newest champion crowned on Saturday night.

ABOUT THE TRACK
Under the ownership of Speedway Motorsports, Inc., the ultra-modern 4/10-mile red clay oval was the first progressively banked dirt track built in the nation. Brett Hearn is the current Big-Block Modified track record-holder, stopping the clocks in a time of 15.088 seconds for a one-lap average speed of 95.440 mph on May 25, 2005. Tim McCreadie established the DIRTcar 358-Modified Series mark at Charlotte, posting a time of 15.956 sec/90.248 mph on April 4, 2003.
PREVIOUS WINNERS
While 2010 marks the first World Finals competition at Charlotte, the mighty Big-Block Modifieds from the Northeast first invaded North Carolina in the spring of 2001, that year following a twin 50-lap feature format. The program changed to include a 100-lap finale in 2004 before settling on a distance of 55 laps in ’05 when the show moved to a mid-week date in May run in conjunction with the Coca-Cola 600 Cup event next door. Inaugural winner Steve Paine (2001, ’03) is the only repeat champion while Brett Hearn (2001), Tim McCreadie (2002), Doug Hoffman (2002), Kevin Bolland (2003), Ricky Elliott (2004) and Tim Fuller (2005) own one victory each. Hearn also claimed the final DIRTcar 358-Modified feature staged at Charlotte in 2004 while Jack Johnson won the inaugural small-block show held the year prior.

TRACK HISTORY
In May 2000, The Dirt Track at Charlotte state-of-the-art four-tenths-mile clay oval was completed across Highway 29 from the super speedway. Opening as The Dirt Track @ Lowe’s Motor Speedway, the $10 million facility hosted three of dirt racing’s premier series that first year with Mark Kinser claiming both World of Outlaws Sprint Series A-Mains, Scott Bloomquist and Dan Schlieper posting Hav-A-Tampa Late Model victories and Mike Hacker scoring an American Motorcycle Association Grand National win.The stadium-style facility boasts a seating capacity of more than 14,000 and today plays host to the Super DIRTcar Series for Big-Block Modifieds, World of Outlaws Series events for both Sprint Cars and Late Models, and the region’s only outdoor Monster Truck event. DIRTcar Racing founder Glenn Donnelly was inducted into The Dirt Track Walk of Fame on April 3, 2004, joining 20-time World of Outlaws Sprint Car champion Steve Kinser, DIRTcar Big-Block Modified veteran Bob McCreadie, longtime sprint car ace Sammy Swindell, late model stock car legends Freddy Smith and Mike Duvall, and the late AMA motorcycle star Will Davis.

2005
After being named DIRTcar Northeast’s Driver of the Year in 2004, Tim Fuller put his name at the top of the list the next season with a decisive $10,000 victory in the Modified main held at The Dirt Track the last Wednesday in May. Fuller was fourth fastest in time trials and captured the second qualifying heat before drawing third to start the 50-lap main inside row two. Fuller pulled even with early leader Gary Tomkins as the lead duo crossed the stripe to complete lap 13 and then ducked under in turn two to forge what would be the final lead change although it was never a runaway for the Edwards, N.Y. chauffeur. Despite a late race caution period, Fuller dashed over the finish line three car-lengths ahead of Jimmy Horton, with Justin Haers, Kenny Tremont and Matt Sheppard crossing the stripe in that order.
2004
Ricky Elliott from Seaford, Del. scored a convincing victory in the tour’s only 100-lapper held at The Dirt Track. Despite competing in a Big-Block Modified for nearly 15 years, the $10,000 triumph was his first victory in a Super DIRTcar Series event in just his fourth race of the year with a brand new team. Eighth-place starter Elliott was second after only 10 laps and just before a caution flag flew he drove around Tim McCreadie on the 14th circuit to take command for good. Pole-sitter Steve Paine settled for second ahead of sixth-starting Matt Sheppard while Kenny Tremont charged from the 18th-starting spot to finish fourth ahead of Brett Hearn in the 33-car field.
2003
Steve Paine, from Waterloo, N.Y. and Kevin Bolland, from Brighton, Pa., each won separate 50-lap segments in the century grind staged at the Charlotte short track. For Paine it was his second win at the track, his first coming at the inaugural race in 2001. For Bolland it was not only his first victory in the state, it was the first of his career in the Super DIRTcar Series. Paine overtook Bolland in the early stages of the first race and cruised home the winner by 10 car-lengths over Billy Decker and Doug Hoffman, while Bolland settled for fourth ahead of Ron Smoker. In victory lane, Paine redrew to invert the top-four cars in the second 50-lapper, giving Bolland pole-position for the nightcap. In one of the worst looking accidents in series history, Bobby Varin was pushed sideways on the restart bunching the field behind him. Gary Tomkins had nowhere to go and was launched up into the air over the Varin machine, which was rolled over by the impact. Tomkins sailed up and over the Varin car some 15 feet in the air, landing on the nose of his number 84 and forcing out the red flag to clear away the destroyed Varin machine. Despite a late yellow flag extending the distance to 53 laps, the remainder of the race was less climactic as Bolland went on to stretch out a five-car advantage over Decker followed by Hoffman, Tim Fuller and Brett Hearn.
2002
The return appearance of the Big-Block Modifieds to Charlotte in April ended with Tim McCreadie from Watertown, N.Y. and Doug Hoffman from Allentown, Pa. capturing Super DIRTcar Series checkered flags with each victory worth $5,000. In the opener, Canadian Pete Bicknell out-dragged pole-sitter McCreadie yet dropped to second behind Steve Paine on lap 11. Hard-charging McCreadie grabbed his first lead on lap 13, but fell back to second the very next circuit, although he managed to secure the lead for good on lap 15. McCreadie took the checkers on lap 53 after another late race caution, followed by Todd Burley, who suffered a smashed cheek bone after being hit by debris, Alan Johnson, Vic Coffey and Tim Fuller. McCreadie drew number 4 to invert the top two rows for the second 50-lapper. Coffey took the lead at the drop of the green to begin round two and staved off a host of challengers until Hoffman finally drove around for good on lap 36. Switching cars for the second feature, Billy Decker rallied through the pack and passed Fuller for third with three laps to go, while Steve Paine filled out the final front-five.
2001
Central New York Big-Block Modified star Steve Paine captured the first-ever feature for the Super DIRTcar Series at The Dirt Track at Charlotte, with all-time tour champion Brett Hearn following up with victory in the second 50-lapper. The brothers Johnson, Danny and Alan, traded the lead early in the opener, yet fifth-place starter Paine ducked under both between turns three and four in traffic to forge the final lead change on lap 20. With 23 cars scored on the lead lap at the checkers, Paine took the win over Hearn, Billy Decker, Alan Johnson and pole-winner Ward. In victory lane Paine drew number 4 to invert the top four finishing cars, giving Alan Johnson the pole alongside Decker. Third-place starter Hearn wasted little time advancing to the front, passing Johnson for the lead on lap seven and cruising home for a 2-second victory. Johnson, Paine, Decker and Jimmy Horton rounded out the front-five with only nine cars on the lead lap.

New Champion Fitted For Crown: The 2010 World Finals in Charlotte is just that —- the final event in the 2010 Super DIRTcar Series with season-long leaders Matt Sheppard and Jimmy Phelps both in search of their first-ever overall Hoosier Tire-VP Racing Fuels Mr. DIRTcar Big-Block title. Ranking right below on the points chart are two-time champion Billy Decker, seven-time and reigning points king Brett Hearn, and four-time titlist Danny Johnson, who is still looking for his first crown of the new millennium. With the 150-points schedule in effect since Labor Day Weekend, a lot of ground can be made up with a good finish or given up with a poor result in the twin 40-lap races in Charlotte. Sheppard currently maintains a 74-point advantage over Phelps with Decker a long-shot (177 points back) to regain the title he last held in 2008. The customary 100-point Series formula awards 100 points to the race winner and a minimum of 40 to start, while the current scale being implemented starts at 150 points up top and offers 50 to start.
2010 Mr. DIRTcar Championship On The Line: The overall Hoosier Tire-VP Racing Fuels Mr. DIRTcar Modified Champion in 2010 is determined by adding actual points earned in the Super DIRTcar Series along with bonus points collected at a designated hometrack throughout the racing season. Along with gaining valuable Series points during the year, each driver earns a maximum of 1000 additional points from a hometrack when Mr. DIRTcar Championship points are officially tallied after Labor.
Sussex, N.J. ace Brett Hearn was crowned Mr. DIRTcar Champion in 2009, with his initial title taken two decades earlier in 1990. En route to collecting a record 7th overall Mr. DIRTcar title, the ‘Corporate Jet’ grabbed three checkered flags and held off a late-season rally from Matt Sheppard to garner DIRTcar Racing Northeast’s highest Big-Block Modified honor for owners Guy & Patricia Madsen and the Madsen Motorsports-Wentworth Custom Homes-Benjamin Moore Paints Team. Jimmy Phelps settled for third ahead of ’08 champion Billy Decker with Justin Haers completing the top-5 after enjoying the best year of his budding career. 2009 Big-Block Modified Rookie of the Year Rich Scagliotta from Bound Brook, N.J. finished 17th on the final points chart to lead a sweep for Garden State regulars.

Sheppard SPEEDs Ahead: Kicking off the final week of racing in the Super DIRTcar Series, current Hoosier Tire-VP Racing Fuels Mr. DIRTcar Big-Block Modified Championship Series points leader Matt Sheppard is slated to join “Wind Tunnel with Dave Despain” on SPEED at 9 p.m. ET Sunday, Oct. 31. Live via satellite, Sheppard will discuss the Big-Blocks debut during the upcoming Lowes Foods World Finals at The Dirt Track at Charlotte, look back at his past trips to North Carolina, and comment on the most successful seasons of his career —including the past two— teamed with Jeff Brownell Sr. steering the JB Motorsports No. 9s Xtreme Lubricants/Bicknell entry. Sheppard will then be captured LIVE on Saturday, Nov. 6 as he battles for the coveted Mr. DIRTcar crown in a special four-hour broadcast seen across the country on SPEED TV beginning at 8 p.m.
Changing Of The Guard: When the Super DIRTcar Series made its first visit to The Dirt Track at Charlotte in 2001, Roger Slack served as manager of the short-track racing program for then named Lowe’s Motor Speedway. DIRTcar founder Glenn Donnelly first put Slack on the flagstand for a GATR Big-Rig Truck race when he was 14 and the grandson of Cayuga (Ont.) Speedway pioneer Bob Slack returned the favor a dozen years later by putting the Big-Block Modifieds on the schedule in the track’s second year of operation. DIRTcar Northeast’s top open-wheel traveling series quickly got over its identity crisis in the south, signing up 79 race teams and attracting over 10,000 race fans for the inaugural trip to NASCAR’s backyard. Today, Slack is World Racing Group Executive Vice President of Events and his replacement at Charlotte is Alex Hoag, a transplant from New York State’s Southern Tier and grandson of Northeast Modified Hall of Famer Dutch Hoag. The third-generation racer from Bath, N.Y. also competed at the dirt track, with the 2000 DIRTcar 358-Modified Rookie of the Year finishing 8th (started 28th) in the 2003 Mr. DIRTcar 358-Modified Championship event. He failed to crack the Big-Block starting grid in both the 2001 and ’03 specials run down south.
Hearn Has History At Charlotte: While Super DIRTcar Series record-holder Brett Hearn has already won at The Dirt Track at Charlotte, the Sussex, N.J. speedster also has experience on asphalt at the neighboring super speedway. The first time Hearn competed at Charlotte Motor Speedway he was a struggling pavement newcomer in a starting field that included Bobby and Davey Allison, Dale Jarrett, Dale Earnhardt, Bill Elliott, Bobby Labonte, Rusty Wallace, Mark Martin and Darrell Waltrip. Driving a Buick fielded by an under-financed team, Hearn qualified an impressive 13th for the NASCAR Busch Series event in May of 1988. Second-generation NASCAR ace Jarrett won the race that Saturday afternoon while Hearn had engine problems and completed only 20 laps in what turned out to be his fourth-and final Busch Series start at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Remarked Hearn at the time, “I definitely regret that a deal never came together. The timing was definitely right. I was at the right age and it was still fairly easy to break into the Busch Series at that point. But I was making a good living driving a DIRT Modified and I was stuck between racing up here in the Northeast or moving to Charlotte and starting all over again.”
Memories For The Millennium: Words from H.A. “Humpy” Wheeler, former president and general manager of Charlotte Motor Speedway, in the aftermath of DIRTcar’s highly anticipated debut appearance at the dirt track in 2001. “We learned something when we had a race for DIRT Modifieds, with those cars coming mostly from Upstate New York. I was thinking we might have 4,000 people here and we ended up with closer to 11,000 showing up. We polled the grandstand and found out about three-quarters of the fans came from the Northeast and half of those now live in the area. So there’s a tremendous migration into the Southeast and we’ve got enough people to fill the stands on a continuing basis if we work hard and treat them right.”
Cup Drivers Dig DIRTcar: As the Dirt Track at Charlotte sits in the backyard of NASCAR, will any more Cup drivers be lured under the lights to compete in a full-blown DIRTcar Big-Block when the Northeast’s top Modified Series returns in November? A number of asphalt stars have competed on the DIRTcar circuit in the past with a handful even pulling up into victory lane. Fans at Northeastern DIRT-sanctioned tracks have witnessed the likes of Bobby Allison, Cale Yarborough, Harry Gant, Kyle Petty, Bobby Hillin, Geoff Bodine and Kenny Schrader, and in Y2K Tony Stewart, Dave Blaney, Jerry Nadeau and Carl Edwards steered open-wheel Modified machines. Two-time Cup champion Stewart —a Florida DIRTcar Nationals runner at Volusia from 2000-03— won a small-block tour event at Lebanon Valley (NY) Speedway while both Schrader (Sanair) and Bodine (Thompson) scored their lone wins in DIRT/Asphalt Series competition. Blaney and Edwards have also secured rides in the past at Charlotte, with Blaney twice registered in the familiar J&S Racing no. 74 Smith Bros. Concrete Foundations ride while Edwards drove the back-up no. 3 entry as a teammate to multi-time DIRTcar Modified champion Brett Hearn.
Feature Finale: With the 2010 DIRTcar Racing Northeast season about to conclude, 47 drivers have shared 158 Big-Block checkered flags at 26 tracks. Super DIRTcar Series points leader Matt Sheppard (19) and Super DIRT Week XXXIX SEF Small Engine Fuels 200 pole-sitter Jimmy Phelps (14) rank highest on the list of 28 drivers posting more than one victory. Veteran tour traveler Steve Paine and Pennsylvania rivals Jeremiah Shingledecker and Dave Murdick own nine each. Tour titans Alan and Danny Johnson, Billy Dunn, Bobby Varin, Brian Swartzlander, Rob Bellinger and Kevin Bolland have five victories apiece while Big-Block Series star Billy Decker, Glen Ridge champion JaMike Sowle, Craig Hanson and J.R. Heffner have all captured four checkered flags. All-time SDS winner Brett Hearn plus Lebanon Valley runners Kenny Tremont and Andy Bachetti rank next with three. Series stalwart Dale Planck, Justin Haers, Willy Decker, Jim Davis, Rex King Sr. and Valley regulars Eddie Marshall, Mike King and Ray Hoard, and history making Syracuse SEF 200 Champion Stewart Friesen are the only other repeat winners. Young tour talents Ryan Phelps, Michael Storms and Cayuga County Series winner Larry Wight have also cracked the Central New York winner’s circle this season.
JB Motorsports Goes To Xtreme With Race Award: Continuing to play a pivotal supporting role in the Big-Block Super DIRTcar Series, JB Motorsports team owner Jeff Brownell Sr. has returned with a unique award created last season that will be handed out at each tour stop in 2010. An ‘Xtreme Lubricants Slick Move of the Race’ award will be presented after every series show with the winner receiving $100 in product. A $500 cash bonus to the overall ‘Xtreme Lubricants Slick Move of the Year’ winner will be delivered during the DIRTcar Racing Northeast ‘Night of Champions’ Awards Banquet to be held at the Turning Stone Resort in November. The ‘Xtreme Lubricants Slick Move of the Race’ will be determined by those Series officials presiding over each event. The criteria does not limit the award winner to making a memorable move on the track, as any noteworthy action —avoiding an accident en route to the track or helping out a fellow competitor in the pits— on race day could sway voters when making their final decision. Veteran Central New York car owner Brownell boasts four decades of experience in the oil business with 25 years recognized nationally as a company owner.
Andrews Anchors DIRT Radio Network Broadcasts: Nationally recognized SPEED commentator and popular track public address announcer Shane Andrews is back on the road in 2010 serving as the official voice of the Super DIRTcar Series for a fifth consecutive year. In addition to traveling the DIRTcar Northeast circuit and carrying out his accustomed weekend announcing duties, Andrews will also be a regular host heard on the DIRT Radio Network. VP Racing Fuels Power DIRTcar Northeast Circuit: VP Racing Fuels continues in its second full season after signing a multi-year agreement in 2009 to be the Official Racing Fuel of the Super DIRTcar Series, World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series and the World of Outlaws Late Model Series, as well as every division of DIRTcar Racing and UMP DIRTcar Racing, along with a number of regional touring series that fall under the DIRTcar banner. The multi-faceted deal kicked off a second decade in the newest millennium with the season-opening Florida DIRTcar Nationals by UNOH at Volusia Speedway Park, where VP was recognized as the sole fuel supplier throughout the week.
