DIRTcar Racing Northeast Weekly Points Update: August 30

Weedsport, NYSeptember 1, 2010 – By Tom Skibinski, DIRTcar Racing Northeast PR Director

DIRTcar Racing Northeast point chases conclude on Labor Day Weekend with circuit-wide races for Big-Block, 358-Modified, Sportsman Modified and Pro Stock teams coming to a head Sept. 6 at Rolling Wheels Raceway in Elbridge (NY). Track bonus points toward the overall Hoosier Tire-VP Racing Fuels Mr. DIRTcar Championship will be issued at that time, with 2010 Regional champs declared in the open-wheel classes.

On the verge of capturing his first Cayuga County Fair Speedway Big-Block title, Matt Sheppard and Brewerton and Fulton front-runner Jimmy Phelps have solidified their places atop the Central Region Modified points chart heading into the final weekend. Two big wins at Lebanon Valley have vaulted J.R. Heffner into 2nd just two points behind Craig Hanson in the Eastern standings, with only 2 more markers separating 3rd-place JaMike Sowle, the current Glen Ridge leader.
Tri-City champ Jeremiah Shingledecker is the first Big-Blocker to clinch out West.

Only eight points stand between leader Stephane LaFrance from Ontario and Frenchman Kayle Robidoux, with Tim O’Brien sandwich between in the DIRTcar 358-Modified Northern Region standings. With the help of eight feature wins this season, ‘Mr. Small-Block’ Pete Bicknell has already locked up the Regional title on the Western front over Chad Brachmann and Mat Williamson.

Teenager Chris Raabe has wrapped up the Northern Region Sportsman crown with a perfect score of 720 points during a record-setting campaign that already boasts 27 checkered flags. Bodie Bellinger is on the brink of claiming his first Regional title in the East while rising star Ryan Susice leads open-wheel veteran Greg Panunte by a half-dozen markers in the Western Region points race. Steve Gray is on track to garner Central Region high point honors ahead of Jeremy Pitcher and Justin Wright, with all titles determined in one more week.

In tour activity, Mohawk Int’l Raceway hosts the rescheduled Mr. DIRTcar Pro Stock Championship event today (9/1), while the Big-Block Super DIRTcar Series and Mr. DIRTcar 358-Modified champ trail return to action on Sunday.

Series point leaders Sheppard and Phelps will go at it again in the Labor Day 100 at Cayuga County on Sept. 5 while an international legion of Small-Block stars will headline the Cornwall card in their own 100-lapper that same evening in Ontario, Canada. Sportsman are back on tour for three straight shows, Sept. 10-12, at Ransomville, Merrittville and Humberstone speedways.
