The Hoosier Tire-VP Racing Fuels Mr. DIRTcar Pro Stock Series headed north of the border to Autodrome Edelweiss for the fifth race of the 2009 series. The full-fender category had the longest race of the series with 100 laps to be completed and a nice show up of 20 Pro Stocks visited Edelweiss for the second year in a row.
Second-generation standout Joey Ladouceur continued his streak by winning his third straight series race and left Edelweiss $1,500 richer after scoring his 12th win of the season on the DIRTcar Racing Northeast circuit.
American Don Carlson and Frenchman Ghislain Valade were at top of the 20-car field to start the 100-lap Pro Stock Series main. Carlson took the early lead with Valade in second and three-time defending Mr. DIRTcar Pete Stefanski in third.
Carlson quickly moved away from the field as Ladouceur took fourth spot over Jocelyn Roy on lap five. Ladouceur and Stefanski were racing side by side when caution came out on lap 10 for Ricky Thompson.
On the restart, Carlson kept the lead with Ladouceur getting a good jump to take third. Ladouceur moved into second ahead of Valade on lap 13 and was now chasing Carlson for the lead. The top-two cars raced side by side as Ladouceur finally took the lead by passing Carlson using the inside lane on lap 18.
Ladouceur and Carlson started to pull away from the rest of the pack with a quarter of the race in the books, and Ladouceur proceeded to build himself a comfortable lead over Carlson on lap 30. Local runner Stéphane Lebrun was running hard and took the third spot over Valade on lap 34.
Ladouceur was now getting closer to slower traffic as the race reached lap 40, stretching his advantage to almost a full straightaway over Carlson in second. Sean Corr brought the caution on lap 43 as they raced 33 consecutive laps under green conditions.
Ladouceur quickly pulled away from Carlson on the following green with Stéphane Lebrun taking back third. Sean Corr brought out another caution on lap 47 with Ladouceur staying first over Carlson and Lebrun while Stefanski held down fourth.
The mandatory caution came out at the halfway point with Ladouceur, Carlson, Lebrun, Stefanski and Dave Bissonnette making up the top-five running order.
After the 10-minute mandatory break, Ladouceur retained the lead over Carlson and Lebrun with Bissonnette now fourth over Stefanski. Bissonnette used the outside lane to pass Lebrun in third spot as both cars raced together repeatedly swapping positions.
Louie Jackson brought out the caution on lap 59 as he hit the wall in the front stretch. The race started back on lap 65 with Ladouceur still the leader while Carlson lost several positions. Lebrun was now in second spot with Bissonnette third when David Papineau brought the caution on lap 68.
Ladouceur pulled away on the ensuing green while Stefanski took third over Bissonnette when Rob Yetman stopped inside of turn 4 on lap 73 and caution came out. The race resumed on lap 77 with the top-3 remaining unchanged.
Stefanski tried to take second over Lebrun and was able to close the door with 15 laps to go. Stefanski finally grabbed the spot in turn two on lap 86 and with 10 laps to go, tried to track down Ladouceur. The leaders were in heavy traffic with only five laps to go and Stefanski was able to reel in his biggest rival.
Ladouceur led the final laps to win his third feature in a row with Lebrun, P.J. Peters and Valade filling out the front-five.
Ladouceur was the lone driver in the winner’s circle, obviously pleased with his latest win. “It’s fun to see a quality field of cars at Edelweiss for this show. Now we have a 6-hour drive to The Valley tomorrow night and start back again with hopefully the same results.”
The 2009 Mr. DIRTcar Pro Stock Series resumes tomorrow in New York State’s Captital District when Lebanon Valley Speedway hosts the Northeast’s top traveling teams on Saturday, Sept. 12.
