DIRTcar Sportsman Modified Series: 2012 season recap

Cody McPherson wins despite brother Tyler McPherson’s late-season threats

After a busy season in the DIRTcar Sportsman Modified series, Cody McPherson was crowned champion.

McPherson took the title after several races fraught with sibling rivalry, fighting with brother Tyle McPherson, who won series events at Ransomville Speedway, Merrittville Speedway Humberstone Speedway. The brotherly battle at these three consecutive races in September was all the inspiration Cody McPherson needed to charge to victory lane two weeks later during at Brighton Speedway’s Applefest.

Although not scoring any wins, Martin Pelletier and Brandon Easey collected several strong finishes, the former with four top-fives and the later with three, to challenge McPherson in points until the bitter end.

Another challenger, Mathieu Desjardins, found his first-ever DIRTcar series victory in the 2012 DIRTcar Sportsman Modified series, taking the win at Mohawk International Raceway.

Although a newbie on Syracuse’s “Moody Mile,” Desjardins also stunned crowds during NAPA Auto Parts Super DIRT Week XLI in October, making fast time in qualifying events for the Sportsman championship race and nearly taking the win. However, Rocky Warner passed him with two laps remaining and left Desjardins in second.

As for Cody McPherson, he was able to cap off his season with a strong finish in Syracuse, placing third in the NAPA Auto Parts Super DIRT Week Sportsman Modified 30 and staying first in points after what would become the last Sportsman Modified series race of the season.
