DIRTcar Track Spotlight: Bear Ridge Speedway
Bear Ridge Speedway, in Bradford, VT, is one of only a handful of race tracks located in the picturesque state of Vermont. Like its namesake, the ¼ mile clay oval is a fast, ferocious beast. Every Saturday, starting on May 4, a highly competitive field of DIRTcar Sportsman Modifieds congregate to race it out in front of eager Vermont race fans. 2019 marks the fifty-second consecutive season of family fun at the exciting and historic speedway.
The Ridge’s 2018 DIRTcar Sportsman Modified Championship was won by Kevin Chaffee of Bradford VT. Chaffee rode his success to NAPA Super DIRT Week XLVII, where he competed the Sportsman Modified Fall Championship races against the best Sportsman Modified drivers in the country. Chaffee beat out second-place finisher Robert Tucker of East Corinth, VT, and Riche Simmons from Bradford, VT who completed the podium. Once again, DIRTcar Sportsman Modified drivers’ finishes at Bear Ridge Speedway will count towards the overall Hoosier Racing Tire Weekly Championship points standings.
For those wistfully wishing the race cars of today looked like they did in the 1960s, Bear Ridge Speedway also features a “Sportsman Coupe” division. These dirt modifieds are restricted to using body types from the 1940s, just like drivers of old used the 60s and 70s when car owners raided the local junkyards for their dirt modified creations. It’s something unique to The Ridge that entertains race fans young and old.
Bear Ridge Speedway promotes a family-friendly atmosphere, which includes camping, excellent county-fair style cuisine, and affordable ticket prices. Adults are only $10.00, kids eleven and under are $2.00, and new for 2019, senior pricing is $8.00. There is also a Kid’s Club that includes, “free giveaways, rides with their favorite drivers, pit tours, special autograph sessions and more.”
Race fans can make a family weekend out of going to Bear Ridge Speedway. Visit the Rock of Ages Visitor’s Center, a stone quarry, where they have “been extracting 400 million-year-old stones since 1885.” Visitors can take a tour of the deepest operating granite quarry in the world, take a self-guided tour of the factory, and even play on an outdoor granite bowling lane.
