What started out Wednesday as a warm and breezy summer evening with a generous mix of sun and clouds ended in a downpour, forcing track and tour officials to postpone the Hoosier Tire-VP Racing Fuels Mr. DIRTcar Sportsman Championship Series ‘Jreck Subs 50’ at Mohawk Int’l Raceway.
The division’s first trip to the Route 37 oval in Akwesasne since 1994 was highlighted by time trials and a trio of qualifying heats for the 26 teams in competition. A return visit to the north country will come far sooner as the main event is expected to be rescheduled before the week is out.
Prior to the showers that soak the spacious 4/10-miler, two-time defending Mr. DIRTcar Sportsman Champion Chris Raabe set fast time for the second straight race. The Napanee, Ont. teenager also joined Western New Yorkers Dan Wiesner and Steve Gray in the winner’s circle following their heat races, yet Raabe grabbed the highest number (12) in the customary pre-race re-draw to determine the feature race line-up.
It will be Canadian pilots Dylan Evoy and Sheldon Hoogwerf sharing the front row when the series stars return to MIR in the months ahead, while opening round Black Rock Speedway winner Gray, Mark Chiddy, points leader Ryan Susice, Wiesner and Cornwall Motor Speedway winner Tim Sears Jr. follow next on the truly international grid.
The Mr. DIRTcar Sportsman Series takes nearly a three-week break before getting the green light at Cayuga County Fair Speedway on Saturday, July 17 as part of the 2nd Annual DIRTcar All-Star Weekend, July 16-17 at the home of DIRTcar Northeast.
