BY DAVE MEDLER – BREWERTON- NY – September 16, 2016 – Forty-one Sportsman signed into the Brewerton Speedway pits Friday for round eight of the DIRTcar Sportsman Championship Series. It would take four heats and two consolations to set the 30 car starting field that would battle for 50 laps.
Ron Davis III from Memphis, NY who had won the last two tour stops at tracks he had never seen before, the Ransomville Speedway and Humberstone Speedway, would come to his home track to make it three wins in a row Friday for the Brewerton and Fulton Speedways SUNY Canton Sportsman 2016 track champion.
Tony Finch II and Dave Marcuccilli would lead the thirty car starting field down to the green with Finch grabbing the early advantage in the 50 lap main. Finch’s lead would be short-lived when Marcuccilli used the top on lap 3 to be scored the new leader.
With 15 laps showing on the scoring tower Marcuccilli, Shane Pecore and Brad Rouse were locked in a tight battle for the lead while also in heavy traffic trying to put cars a lap down just before a quick yellow when a uke tire got onto the racing surface.
When the green came back out Pecore took advantage of the top of the speedway carrying his momentum into the lead on lap 16.
With 20 laps complete, Pecore opened the biggest lead of the race of about 10 car lengths over Rouse. Marcuccilli, Kevin Root, Martin Pelletier and Kevin Root were slugging it out for third through sixth.
By lap 30 Rouse reeled in leader Percore in heavy traffic with Marcuccilli, Kevin Root and Ron Davis III keeping the top two within striking distance just before disaster almost struck when a backmarker spun right in front of Precore and Rouse.
At the 10 laps to go mark Pecore still led as Rouse was searching different grooves on the speedway looking for a way by. Root, Davis and Rocky Warner were in a tight fight for third through fifth.
With 5 laps to go Davis worked his way to third and joined Pecore and Rouse setting up a shootout to the checkers while in heavy traffic.
On lap 47, Davis, using the top of the speedway drove by Rouse and set his sights on Pecore. It took Davis just one lap as he disposed of Pecore and a lapped car in one move on the top of the speedway and got the win. Brad Rouse got by Shane Pecore for second with Pecore third, Rocky Warner fourth and Kevin Root fifth.
After doing the victory lane roof dance on his Scott Jeffery’s Performance Plus Shock Service/Bratt Organic Dairy Farms/ Brian McDied Contracting/ Brenda’s Diner/ No.32R Ron Davis III talked about how he didn’t even know if he could last the 50 laps, let alone win.
“The spline in the rear-end lost two teeth when we were changing gears. We were debating on what to do and decided to play it safe and get a new shaft to put in, but nobody had one, so we just decided to roll the dice and see how it works.”
Davis then talked about the two big passes of Brad Rouse and then series point leader Shane Pecore for the win. “ They were fighting for the bottom, so the harder I drove it in the car was starting to handle. They were getting caught up in lapped traffic. Luckily I sneaked by a couple (Pecore and the lapped car) and sealed it off right there. After that I just tried to hit my marks and not mess up.”
