Big-Block stars dominated the small-block portion of the 2nd Annual Global Warranty DIRTcar Fall Nationals at Brockville Ontario Speedway on Saturday night with Billy Decker winning the 100-lap main event while runner-up Danny Johnson claimed his fourth overall Hoosier Tire-VP Racing Fuels Mr. DIRTcar 358-Modified Championship.

Decker’s second straight 358-Modified tour victory earned the Unadilla, N.Y. driver $4,000 yet Johnson’s second-place tally was worth $2,500 and another $10,000 that will be awarded his team during the 2010 DIRTcar Racing Northeast ‘Night of Champions’ Awards Banquet at the Turning Stone Resort & Casino in November.

Last weekend’s Super DIRT Week SEF Small Engine Fuels 200 winner Stewart Friesen finished third ahead of 26th-place starter Carey Terrance while Decker’s Gypsum Express teammate Pat Ward rounded out the Top-5 on a cool night in the Thousand Islands region of Ontario, Canada.

“My hats off to a great team, Mike Payne (owner) worked so hard this season to accomplish this, thank God we got this one for him,” said Johnson, following his first Mr. DIRTcar 358-Modified title since the start of the new millennium. Johnson is also a four-time overall Mr. DIRTcar points champion in the Big-Block Modified ranks. “No one deserves it more than he does.”

“We’ve been on fire all year, still have to credit Mike. We’ve had some bad luck and made some bad choices along the way but overall we’ve made more good choices and got some good results. It’s great to get recognized by DIRT, (championship) is what we strive for. Now we get to take our car to the banquet and get more exposure there, that’s what it’s all about,” Johnson added.

While Johnson and Decker both copped qualifying heats to help sort out the 48-car field of small-block racers entered, luck of the draw put Decker on the pole alongside front row partner Friesen to begin the 100-lap finale. Johnson selected the highest number (12) available to begin outside row six aboard the potent Honeoye Auto Parts no. 7z Currier Plastics-Waste Management-Rochester Americans/Bicknell ride equipped with a Mike Mastin-prepared powerplant.

Friesen bolted out to an early lead at the drop of the initial green flag with Decker in close pursuit steering the LJL Racing no. 91 Gypsum Wholesalers-Stadium Int’l-Quality Hardwoods/Bicknell mount. The leaders reached traffic by lap 11 and Decker needed just four more times around the high-banked 3/8-miler to wrestle the top spot from Friesen and forge the final lead change.

The first yellow flag of the race was thrown on lap 19 when local pilot Jason Riddell slid over the turn 1-2 embankment. During the slowdown points leader Danny O’Brien ducked pitside looking to get more traction in the Kendrick Motorsports no. 7* Global Warranty-1000 Islands RV-Stover Bus Lines/Bicknell entry in the early going.

Back under green Decker continued to pace the field ahead of Friesen with Brett Hearn moving into third ahead of Ontario native Kyle Dingwall and Frenchman Dany Bilodeau. At the halfway mark the lead trio of Decker, Friesen and Hearn remained up front, with Johnson already cracking the front-five and looking for more.

After former north country regular Mike Adderley slid off the back chute to force out a fourth yellow flag on lap 55, Johnson took advantage of the ensuing restart to blast from fourth to first and set his sights on Decker. Yet even four more caution periods coming down the stretch was not enough for the ‘Doctor’ to slip past Decker, and two car-lengths separated the two open-wheel veterans at the line.

“We had a good starting spot and tonight we just got away with one,” downplayed Decker, who earned his second small-block win after a dominating performance last Saturday in the Super DIRT Week special on the Syracuse Mile. “Just have to thank John and Laura (Wight, owners) for this whole deal, they give me a great piece and Scott (Jeffery, crew chief) and the guys always have it ready on race day.”

“We made a few small changes after the heat, just tried to guess on where the track would be. Being the leader, at one time I thought we could be in trouble, just not knowing where the line had changed to. Dan had gotten under me in turn one and two so the next restart I moved down a lane and I was able to hold him off. The Big-Block race will be a little different here tomorrow so we’ll certainly have to put our best foot forward of we want to do this good,” Decker added.

Fresh of making history as the first Canadian to win the SEF 200 in Syracuse, Friesen was still content finishing behind two of the best Big-Block drivers Saturday on neutral ground.

“We’re pretty pumped after finishing behind these guys, its nothing to hang your head about finishing behind Billy and Danny,” noted Friesen, who was 10th quickest in time trials 3/10-sec. off the mark set by fast timer Pete Bicknell. The third-generation pilot from Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ont. also won the sixth and final qualifying heat before his front row draw. “We’re bringing out our no. 1 Big-Block car tomorrow, hopefully it will be just as competitive.”

Following Johnson (1790) in the final 2010 Hoosier Tire-VP Racing Fuels Mr. DIRTcar 358-Modified Series Championship point standings are Pete Bicknell (1752), Danny O’Brien (1751), Mario Clair (1666), David Hebert (1654), Pat O’Brien (1599), Mat Williamson (1533), Carey Terrance (1512), Eric Gauvreau (1511), and 2010 top rookie Luke Whitteker (1508).

SKIDMARKS
Luke Whitteker earned 2010 Rookie of the Year honors … third fast time set by Pete Bicknell, only driver to repeat in 10 events run under the clocks, improving his career total to 12 which ranks him second all-time … Last year’s rookie of the year candidates Mat Williamson and Jeremy Wilder both no shows on Saturday despite holding down Top-10 positions in the overall Mr. DIRTcar 358-Modified standings … In the pre-race draw, 2010 Super DIRT Week winners Stewart Friesen and Billy Decker grabbed front row starting spots with ‘Salute The Troops 150’ 358-Modified Champion Decker starting on the pole and ‘SEF Small Engine Fuels 200’ Big-Block winner Friesen filling in outside … tough competition as last year’s top-two finishers Mario Clair and Dale Planck needed to qualify through the consolation round as did Saturday night’s fast timer Bicknell.
