Ransomville, NYJuly 31, 2009 – By Tom Skibinski, DIRTcar Racing Northeast PR Director

New car, same result for a familiar face Friday night at Ransomville Speedway as veteran racer Danny Johnson was crowned champion of the 25th Annual Alex Friesen Summer Nationals presented by Coors Light and Hard Copy Wholesale.

And it was another precision performance by the ‘Doctor’ as Johnson wasted little time in his reunion with former car owner Dave Thompson, scoring a narrow victory over Dale Planck in the 100-lap headline event that concluded round two of the Hoosier Tire-VP Racing Fuels Mr. DIRTcar 358-Modified Championship on the ridge.

“It’s a new deal going together, don’t really know, its day by day, hour by hour so we just take it as it comes,” remarked Johnson, 49, in response to his newest team formation just in time to rack up a 53rd career 358-Mod Series victory and all-time high seventh in tour competition at Ransomville. Since the Summer Nationals was launched in 1985, the second-generation chauffeur from Rochester, N.Y. has garnered a record-tying sixth wins, with Friday night’s romp his fourth in a Small-Block.

Chasing Big-Block Modified Super DIRTcar Series standouts Johnson and Planck across the line were defending track champion Pete Bicknell, Friday night Ransomville regular Chad Brachmann and ’08 Summer Nationals winner Todd Burley, while Stewart Friesen, Danny O’Brien and Jeff McGinnis were the last to complete the entire 100-lap distance.

With intermittent showers delaying time trials until 8:45pm, Johnson was clocked 23rd fastest in the Thompson Motorsports no. FX1 Troyer mount, yet the customary re-draw for heat race inversion put the three-time Mr. DIRTcar 358 points champion on the pole where he settled for runner-up honors to 358-Modfied opening day Merrittville Speedway winner Larry Lampman Jr. Luck of the draw was again on Johnson’s side come feature time as he joined pole-sitter Bicknell on the front row to help lead the 30-car starting field to the initial green flag.

Johnson out-dragged the Canadian Hall of Famer from St. Catharines, Ont. and it took the lead duo just 11 laps around the ultra-smooth 3/8-miler to reach traffic. Planck was in the fray from the outset and was in position to overtake Bicknell on a lap 36 restart and then charged past Johnson high across the stripe to forge the first lead change on lap 55.

Planck tried to pull away from the trailing pack, going under, over , around and even splitting lapped cars, yet Johnson never retreated as he shadowed the Cortland, N.Y. pilot for the next 20 circuits. Johnson rallied using the high side of the speedway to perfection, pulling even with Planck as he navigated through the frontstretch moat on lap 79, finally sandwiching the leader in a three-wide maneuver on the back straightaway to regain the point for the final time one lap later.

Planck kept Johnson in his sight the remainder of the way as the leaders continued to weave through traffic both high and low. A last lap surge fell three car-lengths shy with Johnson collecting the $4,000 first-place check for his first Small-Block Series win in nearly three years.

“I had a big lead I thought, then it closed up. I saw (Dale) got quick on the bottom so I moved down there thinking that was maybe the way to go,” noted Johnson, whose last series win came on the Syracuse Mile during Super DIRT Week ’06 when he last teamed with Thompson. “Then he buzzed around the top on me so I just had to go to the top too. That’s when we found a little speed up there and that’s what worked for me.”

“They (officials) told the guys to hold their line in traffic and everybody did what they were supposed to do. But its still a tough deal when you catch up to somebody and try to pass them. I guess it was a great race, everybody got to enjoy it tonight … have to remember Alex (Friesen), he was a great friend of mine and its just great to be here tonight,” said Johnson, who last earned the Summer Nationals trophy in 2004, winning his first two in 1989 and ’96 when Big-Blocks headlined the event.

Following a third-place tally in the Merrittville lid-lifter held in May, Planck improved one position steering the RezX Racing no. 77X Grow It Hydroseeding/TEO mount to another solid finish.

“Someday maybe I’ll come out ahead when Danny Johnson’s not here,” smiled Planck, 39, like Johnson a second-generation driver with his life spent racing anything on wheels at tracks around the Northeast. “He was my hero growing up so just to be out there racing with him is a thrill.”

“Thought I was getting through lapped traffic pretty decent and then I came up and they were about three-wide. Had no place to go and of course there goes the Doc, snuck right under my nose. He raced me clean and I raced him clean, you can’t get much better than that.”

“The rain definitely gave the track a little more bite throughout the whole race. I figured after about lap 50 everything was gonna change up a little bit and that’s actually when the car started going good. But I was admittedly only good on the open track, when I got in traffic I was in trouble. Didn’t have enough gear to get up off the corner and Danny snuck down where there’s plenty of bite on the bottom, so I was done at that point. I have to thank Carey (Terrance, team owner) and everybody that stuck behind us. We’ve been struggling with the Big-Block program so hopefully this is a sign of good things to come,” added Planck, after emerging as the new 358 Series points leader through two events.

Gaining the pole-position start gave Bicknell the best chance to finally cop his first-ever DIRTcar 358-Modified Series win at Ransomville, yet ‘Mr. Small-Block’ remained tied for fifth all-time with 19 tour triumphs after finishing in the top-five for the 10th time in his legendary career.

“I thought I was okay but that restart (lap 36) put me on the bottom and it really hurt because it gave Dale a good chance to get around me nice and clean and fast,” said Bicknell, 54, the three-time and reigning overall Mr. DIRTcar 358 points king who finished fifth in the tour opener at Merrittville. “At that point I still thought there were times that I could catch them but then I’d just slip up a little bit.”

“I got a little bit loose at the end and the lapped traffic was just hard to get by, that was the biggest hold-up for me. The racing was great early on, a bunch of times I was up to Danny and thought I had a couple chances to make a move on him. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen. But the car was still great, fast early in the night and good in the heat. The track was just so good with that rain, just made it so fast and moist. We’ve never seen this place so fast and so good,” Bicknell added.

Racing in the Mr. DIRTcar 358-Modified Series takes off the month of August before teams chasing points towards the overall Hoosier Tire-VP Racing Fuels Mr. DIRTcar 358-Modified Championship Series return to action across the border when Cornwall (Ont.) Motor Speedway stages round number three of the 2009 tour on Sunday, September 6.

SKIDMARKS
The 2009 edition of the Summer Nationals marked the 13th straight year that the headline event has honored the late Alex Friesen, former promoter of the Friesen Family facility. With his parents Stan and Diane, and brothers Jamie and Joel still major forces at the speedway, 33 year-old Alex was the victim of a fatal snowmobile accident on December 5, 1996 and the following summer the track’s signature event was renamed in his honor….A great field of 42 Small-Blockers signed in on the final day of July, up eight cars from the previous year even with $6,800 on top in the 68-lap ’08 Summer Nationals title race. The Friday field included 13 invaders with a handful of regulars from north of the border at Merrittville (Ont.) Speedway making the trip….an ultra-fast track in qualifying resulted in a pair of red flag situations during the heats which took well over half-hour to run off, and still one more stoppage in the consolation round. Small-Block rookie Erick Rudolph got great bite coming off turn in heat race #2, ramming the back of Bobby Herrington who turned sideways sending Scott Kerwin around and slamming into a juke tire on the back stretch. A third heat incident started when Todd Stewart ducked under Travis Braun exiting turn two, with Braun tapping Stewart attempting to regain his position which sent Stewart into a series of barrel rolls down the back straightaway. In the first of two consis, Perry Francis and Justin Sharp tangled in turn one to set off the red lights for a final time. No injuries were reported in any of the mishaps. Johnson’s most recent victory at Ransomville guaranteed him an automatic starting berth in the 358-Modified Championship on October 10 of Super DIRT Week XXXVIII at he New York State Fairgrounds….Wet weather continued to hamper the ‘09 Mr. DIRTcar 358 Series, with the original April opener at Can-Am Motorsports Park scrapped due to rain before Merrittville’s April 25 show was finished on May 18 following April showers.
