Matt Sheppard Scores First 358 Series Win At Mohawk

Super DIRTcar Series traveling star Matt Sheppard took his Small-Block show on the road Friday night and survived rain-soaked track conditions to capture the Hoosier Tire-VP Racing Fuels Mr. DIRTcar 358-Modified Championship Series ‘A&M Beverage 75’ at Mohawk Int’l Raceway.

‘Super Matt’ collected $4,000 after a dominating run aboard the JB Motorsports no. 9s Xtreme Lubricants/Bicknell entry in his 2010 DIRTcar 358-Modified debut — his first Small-Block tour victory since Super DIRT Week on the Syracuse Mile in 2003.

“This car was just awesome tonight, just like we were last time here with the Big-Block Series,” remarked Sheppard, 28, alluding to his third-place finish in June after leading the initial 89 laps in the 100-lap Modified main. “We were able to bring it home tonight, just had the luck go our way.”

“You can hear the (right rear) tire leaking air, it’s got a hole in it and will probably be flat by the time we’re done here,” pointed out Sheppard, in victory lane for the fourth time in Series competition and 14th overall on the DIRTcar 358 circuit. “Just got this motor from Chuck Cice, the first DIRTcar spec 358 engine he’s ever put together, and the car was really bolted tonight.”

In a rough and tumble affair that required eight caution periods and one red flag, Big-Block veteran Billy Decker crossed the line second followed by Frenchman Kayle Robidoux, Danny Johnson and new Mr. DIRTcar 358-Modified points leader Danny O’Brien. Only 13 of the 33 starters took the final checkered flag with 11th-place finisher Pierre Dagenais from Quebec the last scored on the lead lap.

Record rainfall in the north country during September finally subsided Thursday, yet not before inundating the spacious 4/10-mile clay oval to force the Mohawk track maintenance team into action early Friday morning. An ultra-tacky surface greeted 49 race teams for the evening event, with Todd Stone stopping the clocks at 16.581sec (86.846mph) to earn his first career Bilstein Shocks Fast Time award.

Sheppard was a mediocre 21st in time trials, yet after the front-four were inverted for heats, the Waterloo, N.Y. pilot scored an easy victory in the first of five qualifying races. After the Top-10 heat finishers redrew for the main event, however, Sheppard was relegated to eighth on the starting grid while track regular Perry Francis and four time Mr. DIRTcar 358 Champion Pat O’Brien filled the front row.

Francis stormed out to a commanding lead early in the feature go and after just five laps Sheppard had already charged into third position behind O’Brien. Perry moved in on lapped traffic after just eight times around and the slight slowdown allowed Sheppard to close the gap considerably. ‘Super Matt’ ducked under Francis to forge the only lead change on lap 14 and a third of the way through Decker was stationed in third ahead of O’Brien and track owner John Lazore.

Lazore suddenly looped his Chiefs Tobacco Outlet & Gas no. 19 King Enterprises-Mohawk Int’l/Bicknell machine alone in turn four to incur the first yellow flag on lap 28. The shake-up moved Mike Perrotte into the front-five for the first time since dropping early from a fourth-place start.

Treacherous track conditions kept every contender on his toes throughout the 75-lap main, with Sheppard, Decker and Francis maintaining their positions at the midway mark. With 40 laps in the books, Robidoux and Johnson completed the Top-5.

A fuel line broke and erupted into flames on the RezX Racing no. 66x Twin Leaf (Hogansburg)-Tomohawk Tobacco/Bicknell mount of ’10 MIR track champion Carey Terrance on lap 42, at the same forcing officials to drop a rare red flag as quickly as Terrance was able to evacuate his burning car. The second scare of the night came right after for Danny O’Brien after turn three contact with Danny Johnson vaulted his Global Warranty no. 7*1000 Islands RV-Stover Bus Lines/Bicknell ride off all fours before coming to rest in the middle of turn three amidst an on-rushing pack with 43 laps complete.

With 50 laps on the scoreboard, Sheppard and Decker continued to pace the field followed closest by Francis, Lazore and Robidoux while Danny O’Brien rallied back into eighth again tracking down Johnson among the Top-10.

Third-place was a tough spot to hold as Francis first suffered a flat right-rear tire to incur the seventh caution period on lap 56, then stoppage by Lazore on the back chute required the final yellow flag six laps later as he tried to chase down Sheppard and Decker.

Uncontested over the final dozen circuits, Decker closed to within five car-lengths of Sheppard as heavy traffic narrowed the gap in the closing stages. Even when the checkered flag waved over the winner for the 19th time this season, it wasn’t enough to stop the second-generation driver from Central New York as he had circled the track without brakes since the lap 30 mark.

“It definitely helps any time you can get some laps in, hopefully we can bring this momentum into tomorrow,” said Sheppard, who will be in quest of his sixth Super DIRTcar Series win of the season when Mohawk hosts the SUNY Canton 100 on Saturday evening. Sheppard tops the Big-Block tour standings with just a half-dozen point events remaining in the 2010 campaign.

“By then hopefully they’ll have the surface straightened out. It’s a shame, there’s nothing the track team could do out there with all this rain. Sometimes Mother Nature is a little evil. This is such a beautiful facility, I’m glad to finally get a chance to be here in victory lane,” Sheppard added.

Runner-up Decker would have been even happier to reach the winner’s circle first, especially since his Series dry spell piloting the Gypsum Wholesalers no. 91 Stadium Int’l-Quality Hardwoods/Bicknell machine dates back to the Big-Block season-opener at Hagerstown (Md.) Speedway in March.

“You just had to man-up a little bit out there tonight,” stated Decker, 45, who started third and never dropped out of the front-four during the 50-minute main before finishing .879-sec. behind Sheppard at the stripe. “The track was obviously open a little bit and got a lot of rain on it. Just made for some tough sledding and tough seeing, needed to stay with it, that’s for sure.”

“It’s a whole new ball game tomorrow, I’m sure they’re going to work their tails off on the track. It’s been pretty wet and damp, we’ll certainly see a little different race track, more similar to what we saw for the Big-Block (June) race. I’m looking forward to another exciting night, the team has been working hard and hopefully we can have some more fun tomorrow,” Decker said.

Finishing fourth on home soil exactly one week earlier in the tour stop at Autodrome Granby (Que.), Robidoux’s stellar run to the front aboard his potent Bert Transmission no. 46 Genesis Racing Shocks-Rube Restaurant/TEO entry ended with a solid third-place tally in the caution-filled finale.

“It was a hard track tonight, we pushed the car as much as we can,” acknowledged Robidoux, the 2008 Granby points champion with three season titles garnered at sister track Autodrome Drummond during the new millennium. “Had a good fight with the ‘Doctor’ Danny Johnson, think we had a good race tonight. We’ll be back for Syracuse and Brockville (Ont.) in October, two big shows for us to end the year.”

Teams chasing points towards the overall Hoosier-VP Racing Fuels Mr. DIRTcar 358-Modified Championship enjoy three weeks off before returning for four consecutive nights of extra-distance activity during the annual Super DIRT Week extravaganza in Syracuse. Can-Am Motorsports Park kicks off the unique quadrupleheader on Wed., Oct. 6 followed by successive shows at Brewerton Speedway (Oct. 7) and Rolling Wheels Raceway (Oct. 8) before closing out with the headline 150-lap ‘Salute to the Troops’ Championship race Saturday afternoon at the New York State Fairgrounds.
