Concord, NCNovember 4, 2010 – By Tom Skibinski, Super DIRTcar Series PR Director

The mighty Big-Block Modifieds brought their traveling show to The Dirt Track at Charlotte and it was Super DIRTcar Series stalwarts Brett Hearn and Matt Sheppard, along with New York favorite Tim McCreadie, grabbing the spotlight as the 4th Annual Lowes Foods World Finals Presented By Bimbo Bakeries and Tom’s Snacks officially kicked off on Thursday night.

Brett Hearn picked up where he left off five years earlier as the Sussex, N.J. speedster toured the spacious 4/10-mile red clay oval in a time of 15.948 sec. (90.293 mph), which was the quickest during two timed hot lap sessions that set the starting grids for a handful of heat races. In May of 2005 the reigning overall Hoosier Tire-VP Racing Fuels Mr. DIRTcar points king and all-time series champion established the current Big-Block track standard of 15.088 sec. (95.440 mph).

Hearn was second quickest during opening hot laps behind McCreadie, who was sixth best in round two among the field of 52 DIRTcar Modifieds registered from the Northeast. Current Mr. DIRTcar points leader Sheppard improved to fifth fastest after being clocked 13th in the opening segment. All three continued on course in their heat races, with Sheppard and McCreadie each taking a pair of checkered flags while Hearn placed first and second in the eight-lap preliminary events that qualified 20 cars for both 40-lap features scheduled for Friday and Saturday at the Charlotte short track.

“We accomplished what we wanted to do today,” remarked Hearn, 52, who owns the Super DIRTcar Series record of 106 victories along with a tour-best seven Mr. DIRTcar Big-Block crowns. “Our mission was to get in the redraw and we took care of it both times. We’re on easy street right now having qualified for both events so we can just fine tune our set-up which I’m already really comfortable with.”

“With all the rain we had here I was pleasantly surprised with the track conditions. The cushion was a little heavy but I expect it to be back to normal tomorrow with more time to get on it. Every bit of this facility is first rate, I’m looking forward to another good showing tomorrow,” added Hearn, who will be buckled into the potent Madsen Motorsports no. 20 Wentworth Custom Homes-Benjamin Moore Paints/TEO entry when action resumes Friday afternoon.

With three straight victory lane appearances —including two weeks earlier in the Eastern States 200 title event at Orange County Fair Speedway in Middletown, N.Y.— second-generation standout McCreadie is also anxious to get back on the track after two dominating heat race runs in front of a national audience.

“We were cautious out there today, had the car set up a little free in the heat and still hung on,” said McCreadie, 36, who is back aboard Vinny Salerno’s Big-Block powered no. 4-Star Keizer Aluminum Wheels-Kruger-Kosakowski Plumbing & Heating/TEO machine for the third time this season. The Watertown, N.Y., warrior has teamed with downstate New York car owner Salerno for another 10 events strapped into the Four Star Transmissions small-block ride. “We’ll make some adjustments and hopefully have a decent draw come feature time.”

“The track will definitely be different tomorrow, but I think more the way we like it, not having to flat-foot it all the way around. Running both the Modified and Late Model this week is a lot easier with two different teams, especially being hooked up with some real good people. These guys deserve to win with all the time put in giving me such a good car,” noted McCreadie, who is also entered in the World of Outlaws Late Model Series portion of the World Finals behind the wheel of the Sweeteners Plus no. 39 Rocket.

Unveiling a brand new 2011 Bicknell chassis in his return trip to the Tar Heel state, Sheppard hardly missed a beat dominating both qualifying runs to once more establish himself as a pre-race favorite in the bid for the $50,000 Mr. DIRTcar Championship.

“This new (BRP) is close to our other ones so if nothing goes wrong and we stay out of trouble we should be okay,” said Sheppard, 28, already a six-time Super DIRTcar Series race winner this season, with 19 overall wins scored on DIRTcar Northeast’s premier circuit for Big-Block Modifieds. “It wouldn’t hurt to get a good draw, either.”

“The track is pretty similar to when we came down here before. It’s really fast. If we stay together I think we’ll be in good shape to have a top finish. These Bicknell cars are always good and the C.C. engines have been dialed in all season. I like deciding the title at a place like this. A lot of cars, a lot of people and a lot of excitement in one of our biggest events. These are the kind of shows we need more of throughout the year,” Sheppard figured, pilot of the JB Motorsports no. 9s Xtreme Lubricants-Integra Shocks-Bert Transmission/Bicknell machine.

With championship points handed out after timed hot laps and heat race qualifiers, the gap between leaders Sheppard (2925) and Jimmy Phelps (2845) grew to 80 with just two races left. Phelps ran 4th and 7th quickest in timed hot laps before placing 2nd and 3rd in his qualifying heats. Completing the Top-10 in points going into the weekend are
Billy Decker (2744), Hearn (2717), Danny Johnson (2549), Dale Planck (2470), Billy Dunn (2313), Ryan Phelps (2307), Tom Sears Jr. (2205) and Larry Wight (2139).

The remainder of the 28-car feature fields over the weekend will come from a C-Main and two B-Mains held on both Friday and Saturday, with Saturday night’s Lowes Foods World Finals program carried live on the SPEED cable network from 8pm to 12 midnight EST.

The Dirt Track at Charlotte gates open at 3pm and hot laps are scheduled to start at 4pm on Friday and Saturday. Racing will immediately follow the completion of practice sessions for the WoO LMS, WoO Sprint Car Series and Super DIRTcar Series Big-Block Modifieds.
