DIRTcar Racing UMP Weekly Points Update: Schlenk Pads Late Model National Lead, Gilpin Moves To Top Of Modified Standings

MARYVILLE, IL – May 28, 2010 – Rusty Schlenk of Jackson, Mich., continued to pad his lead in DIRTcar Racing’s UMP Late Model national points standings while Devin Gilpin of Columbus, Ind., took control of the Modified national rankings after eight weeks of weekly action.

Schlenk, 23, pushed his edge to 432 points (1,415-973) over Ryan Unzicker of El Paso, Ill., in UMP-sanctioned DIRTcar Late Model races contested through May 24, adding 60 points to his already hefty advantage from the previous week. He registered finishes of second on May 22 at Oakshade Raceway in Wauseon, Ohio (with a 41-car field) and sixth on May 23 at Vermilion County Speedway in Danville, Ill.

Unzicker also competed on May 23 at Vermilion County, finishing fourth to maintain second in the national points battle. He has 15 UMP-sanctioned starts under his belt compared to Schlenk’s 20.

The 19-year-old Gilpin, meanwhile, vaulted from fourth to first in the UMP Modified national points standings, replacing veteran Randle Sweeney of Clifty, Ky., atop the division’s battle. He enters this weekend’s competition holding a 13-point lead (1,250-1,239) over Rusty Griffaw of Festus, Mo.

Sweeney, who had paced the Modified standings for several weeks, fell to fourth in the rankings. He now trails Gilpin by 71 points, with both drivers boasting 19 starts.

There was no change at the top of the national points standings in DIRTcar Racing’s six other UMP divisions. Tait Davenport of West Paducah, Ky. (Pro Late Models), Jimmy Cummins of Waterloo, Ill. (Sportsman), Jeff Lawson of Greenville, Ky. (Limited Modifieds), Trevor Gamble of DeLeon Springs, Fla. (Stock Cars), Scott Mooers of Osteen, Fla. (Factory Stocks) and Michael Rittenberry of Clarksville, Tenn. (Sport Compacts) remained points leaders.
