DIRTcar UMP Weekly Points Update: Unzicker (Late Models) & Allen (UMP Modifieds) Pace DIRTcar UMP Nationals Points Through Week 22

CONCORD, NC – July 1, 2011 – Ryan Unzicker of El Paso, Ill. (Late Models) and Nick Allen of Wheatfield, Ind. (UMP Modifieds) sit atop the DIRTcar UMP national points standings through Week 22 of the circuit’s 2011 season.

The 28-year-old Unzicker, who is in the midst of his most grueling stretch of the 2011 season as he follows the month-long DIRTcar Summer Nationals, holds a hefty 263-point lead (1,753-1,490) over defending national champion Rusty Schlenk of Jackson, Mich., following races completed as of June 26.

Unzicker’s four counted finishes in Week 22 weren’t spectacular – his only top 10 was an eighth-place run in the Summer Nationals event on June 22 at Highland (Ill.) Speedway – but he continued to pile up points. He had made 29 DIRTcar UMP-sanctioned starts through June 26, putting him on the verge of reaching the 35-race threshold upon which Late Model drivers begin replacing their worst finishes/points nights.

Schlenk, meanwhile, continued his steady rise in the national standings. Following a busy five-race week between June 20-26 – his best runs were a pair of top-fives, in the Summer Nationals show on June 23 at Fayette County Speedway in Brownstown, Ill., and a weekly event on June 24 at Farmer City (Ill.) Raceway – he reached his highest position in the points battle this season.

Allen, meanwhile, has surged to the lead in the DIRTcar UMP Modified national points standings. He holds a 53-point advantage (1,559-1,506) over Tim Hancock of Mt. Olive, Ill., who spent several weeks at the top of the rankings.

A four-time feature and five-time runner-up in 24 starts to date, Allen’s Week 22 performance record showed a top finish of fourth on June 24 at Kankakee (Ill.) County Speedway. Hancock recorded three top-five runs – two coming in DIRTcar Summit Racing Equipment Modified Nationals events on June 22 at Highland and June 24 at Tri-City Speedway in Pontoon Beach, Ill. – among his four Week starts and also reached the 25-race plateau for 2011, allowing him to begin replacing his worst finishes/points nights.

Other national points leaders after Week 22 in UMP-sanctioned divisions included Credence Mott of Vienna, Ill. (Pro Late Models), Troy Clark of North Vernon, Ind. (Sportsman); Kentucky’s Jeff Lawson (Limited Modifieds); Nate Zimmer of Mattoon, Ill. (Stock Cars); Jake Hewitt of Troy, Ill. (Factory Stocks); and Kenny Butterfield of Glassford, Ill. (Sport Compacts).
