QUINCY, IL – July 8, 2008 – Afternoon thunderstorms washed out the UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals event scheduled for Tuesday night at Quincy Raceway.
Management of the quarter-mile oval, which was set to host the 18th race of the 2008 Summer Nationals, are discussing a raindate with UMP DIRTcar officials.
Quincy’s rainout was the fifth of this year’s Summer Nationals tour. A sixth program, on June 21 at I-55 Raceway in Pevely, Mo., was canceled and not rescheduled due to flood waters that covered the track’s access road.
The UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals is scheduled to resume on Wednesday night (July 9) with a $6,000-to-win event at Spoon River Speedway in Canton, Ill.
Defending champion Dennis Erb Jr. of Carpentersville, Ill., leads the Summer Nationals points standings with four points race remaining on the schedule. He holds a slim 16-point edge over Brian Shirley of Chatham, Ill.
Shirley’s car owner, Ed Petroff, announced on Tuesday that Shirley will follow the Summer Nationals trail to its final points race this Saturday night (July 12) at Oakshade Raceway in Wauseon, Ohio. Shirley did not begin the tour with plans to enter every event, but his success has him in title contention and Petroff has thus decided to watch the 27-year-old Super Late Model star make a run at the $25,000 crown.
