The green flag waves on what promises to be an exciting 2009 season at South Buxton Raceway on Saturday, May 16.

The ‘09 season will be highlighted by eight special event dates, including three new major shows.

South Buxton has teamed up with Ohsweken Speedway for the Summer Sizzler, a home-and-home series which will take place over two weekends, June 19-20 and July 31-August 1.

The first Summer Sizzler features the UMP Modifieds, which will run at Ohsweken on Friday, June 19, with a return engagement at South Buxton the following night.

The second leg of the Summer Sizzler Series will feature the UMP Late Models at Ohsweken on Friday, July 31, with the rematch at South Buxton the following night.

Drivers will be racing for nightly purses and an overall two-night bonus in both classes. The Late Model features pay $2,000 and the Modifieds $1,000 to win at each track.

The UMP Late Models and Modifieds are the premier divisions at South Buxton, the only dirt track in Ontario which features these two classes as a part of its regular weekly racing program.

“The Summer Sizzler isn’t just for our drivers, we welcome all Late Model and Modified cars from across Ontario, plus drivers from across the (U.S.) border to come over and take part in the shows,” said South Buxton owner Scott Mihalco.

Both Summer Sizzler dates follow Ohsweken’s World of Outlaw shows (Late Models on June 18 and the Sprints on July 28-29).

Another new event at South Buxton is the UMP Modified Can-Am Clash on Saturday, July 4.

The Can-Am Clash will serve as a prelude to the second annual UMP Modified Fall Blowout, which was added to the Canadian UMP Late Model Shootout for the first time last September.

The annual Shootout/Blowout, scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 26, is South Buxton’s premier event.

“The success of the Blowout and the positive feedback, especially from Americans, enticed us to add a second Modified show this year,” said Mihalco.

“We’re expecting a bigger Modified class at South Buxton, and with the interest from the States, we’re excited about the potential for a big field and a great show for the fans,” Mihalco said of the Can-Am Clash.

Power replaces speed for the third new event of the ’09 season as the Southwestern Ontario Tractor Pullers Association makes its first visit to South Buxton on Saturday, July 18.

Details are still being finalized on the various classes of tractors and trucks that will compete on the infield at South Buxton. There will be no stock car racing on the SWOTPA night.

Sprint cars will visit South Buxton three times this season.

The Southern Ontario Sprints will be at the track on May 23 and August 22 and the Michigan-based Sprints On Dirt series on June 13. The SOD show will be the second annual Country 92.9 FM/630 AM CFCO Night at the Races.

There will again be four divisions of competition, including new three with new sponsors – the Ultimate Sandblasting & Coatings (London) UMP Late Models, Sun Parlor Trailers (Windsor) Sport Stocks and the Four Seasons Driver Education (Chatham) Comp 4s.

Schinkels Gourmet Meats of Chatham returns as the title sponsor of the UMP Modified class.

Andrew Reaume of Blenheim is the two-time defending points and championship race winner in the UMP Late Models while Louis Clements of Chatham swept both crowns in the Sport Stock division in 2008.

Leamington’s Paul DeGoey is the reigning points champion in the UMP Modifieds but he will abdicate his crown after suffering serious injuries in a heat race crash during on championship night last fall. Justin Coulter of Leamington won the championship race.

Nate McNally of Charing Cross will be out to defend his Comp 4 points title, while Rob Quick of Cottam won the season championship race.

South Buxton’s annual mall show at the Downtown Chatham Centre takes place April 30-May 2. Cars will be also on display Saturday, May 9, at the Real Canadian Superstore in Chatham and at the Westside Performance Plus car show in Blenheim.

NOTE: South Buxton Raceway is located 10 miles southwest of Chatham, Ont., 45 miles southeast of Windsor and 70 miles southwest of London.
