Stars Shine Under Volusia Speedway Park’s Lights

2009 DIRTcar NationalsOnly 24 Days Remain To Reserve Your Seats For Alltel DIRTcar Nationals By UNOH

BARBERVILLE, Fla. — Jan. 10, 2009 — Ever wonder where the stars come out at night in early February around Daytona Beach, Fla.? The days might be filled with family fun on the Atlantic Ocean beaches from Feb. 3-14, but you never know who you might see in the evenings only 15 miles inland at Volusia Speedway Park.

The 38th Annual Alltel DIRTcar Nationals By UNOH is where Daytona races at night, and there are only 24 days left to reserve your favorite seats and camping locations. If past years are any indication, you might see World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series car owners Kasey Kahne or Tony Stewart helping the crews of the two teams each racing star owns. You can usually find Ken Schrader and Kenny Wallace behind the wheel of a UMP DIRTcar Modified. Just last season Ryan Newman and Clint Bowyer climbed into Super Late Models during one of the 12 consecutive nights of racing. And even Carl Edwards was spotted in the infield filling in for an injured Modified racer.

For many of today’s superstar competitors, their roots are in dirt track racing. Given an opportunity to race again on dirt is a nice escape from the pressures of their day jobs. Not that taking on the drivers in the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series, the World of Outlaws Late Model Series, the Advance Auto Parts Super DIRTcar Series, UMP DIRTcar Open-Wheel Modifieds and UMP DIRTcar Super Late Models on a high-speed, half-mile banked oval is an easy task. While Schrader did win the UMP Modified championship in 2008 during the 37th running of the Alltel DIRTcar Nationals By UNOH, the dirt track stars usually shine when the checkered flag waves.

After racing his UMP DIRTcar Modified in the inaugural UMP DIRTcar Roundup last October, Wallace is geared up for his return to Volusia. “Two years ago I went down to Volusia and I said, ‘This is me, eight nights of dirt racing,’” Wallace said. “I don’t run enough to be really good the first night or the second night, but I love going to Volusia because we get down there before all of the NASCAR stuff starts and it’s my type of racing. It’s Speed Weeks, man, and we start it all out at Volusia.”

Beginning Feb. 3 at the monster oval on State Road 40 are six nights of 410 Sprint Car open-wheel racing featuring the All Star Circuit of Champions and the legendary World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series superstars. Racing with them are the always thrilling UMP DIRTcar Racing Modifieds, which will introduce a new event — “The Gator Championship” — this season. The second week of racing sees the full-bodied machines from the World of Outlaws Late Model Series and UMP DIRTcar Racing. Joining them for what will no doubt be side-by-side, edge-of-your-seat excitement will be the fan favorite Advance Auto Parts Big Block Modifieds.

Make sure to reserve your favorite seats in advance. With trailer heights limited to 9 feet, 6 inches, there are no bad seats in the grandstands. Take advantage of special “Super Ticket” deals that offer seats for all the events contested by each headline division, including the six-day Dirt Late Model races, the six-day Sprint Car events, eight nights of UMP DIRTcar Modified action, and four Advance Auto Parts DIRTcar Big-Block Modified races.
