UMP DIRTcar Racing National Points Update: Schlenk Maintains Super Late Model Lead, Sweeney Regains Modified Top Spot

Grayville, IL — Rusty Schlenk of Jackson, Mich., maintained his Super Late Model national points lead and Randle Sweeney of Clifty, Ky., regained the top spot in the open-wheel Modified national rankings after last weekend’s UMP DIRTcar Racing action.

Schlenk, 22, made two UMP DIRTcar-sanctioned starts last weekend, finishing fifth on May 8 at Mount Pleasant (Mich.) Speedway and a close second on May 9 at Oakshade Raceway in Wauseon, Ohio. His performance extended his national points lead, which he had regained one week earlier, from 53 to 63 points through May 12.

Moving up to second in the Super Late Model standings was Jon Henry of Ada, Ohio, who finished third behind Schlenk at Oakshade.

Among the highlights last weekend on the UMP DIRTcar Super Late Model circuit was the first career win for Jason McBride of Carbondale, Ill. The 22-year-old, second-year full-fender driver broke through on May 9 at Clarksville (Tenn.) Speedway, but it was his only start of the weekend and he fell from second to fifth in the national points standings.

Sweeney, 44, also was triumphant last Saturday night at Clarksville, capturing the UMP DIRTcar Modified feature to regain the national points lead he had lost the previous week to Kent Robinson of Bloomington, Ind. A seven-time winner this season, Sweeney enters this weekend’s competition holding a 60-point edge over Robinson, whose lone start last weekend resulted in a DNQ on Saturday night at Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio.

Other UMP DIRTcar national points leaders include defending Pro Late Model division champ Tait Davenport of West Paducah, Ky.; Clayton Perry of North Vernon, Ind. (Sportsman); Chad Boone of Owensboro, Ky., (Limited Modifieds); Dave Mannise of Fulton, N.Y. (Stock Cars); Bill May of Muskegon, Mich. (Factory Stocks); and Danny Lunn of Altoona, Fla. (4-Cylinders). Boone and May are new points leaders entering this weekend’s UMP DIRTcar action.
