UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals Race 10: Moyer Maneuvers to Clay Hill Motorsports Park Win

DIRTcar Summer NationalsAtwood, TN — June 25, 2009 — Billy Moyer was certainly “Mr. Smooth” during the UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals Stop at Clay Hill Motorsports Park Thursday night.

Biding his time behind then race leader Shannon Babb, Moyer waited for the perfect time to pounce. When Babb slipped out of the low side groove where most of the drivers had chose to run, Moyer drove by him to lead the final five circuits in route to his third “Hell Tour” victory of 2009.

Babb would settle for second on the night after leading past halfway. The Moweaqua, Ill., driver had his best “Hell Tour” performance to date with his finish as well as a quick time honor and heat 3 win. Babb had used his pole position starting spot to battle with Logan, Ill., driver Rodney Melvin through the first five laps. Melvin had used the ill-fated high groove for those first five laps while Babb stayed low and eventually cleared Melvin on lap six.

2007 MARS DIRTcar Series Champion Bill Frye of Greenbrier, Ark., claimed the third spot climbing from a ninth-place starting spot during the 40 lap main event.

Rodney Melvin and Ryan Unzicker rounded out the top five.

38 UMP DIRTcar Late Models attempted qualifying time trials at the banked 3/8-mile facility. Charleston Speedway victor Rodney Melvin timed in quick in group one while Will Vaught, Shannon Babb, and Billy Moyer also captured quick time honors in their group with Moyer being fastest overall in group four.

Four heat races were contested on the night with Rodney Melvin outdistancing the heat one field to take the win while Will Vaught repeated the feat in heat two. Heat three saw Shannon Babb and Frank Heckenast Jr. swap the lead a few times until Babb secured the win late while heat four action saw Moyer lead from the drop of the green taking the win over defending “Hell Tour” champion Dennis Erb Jr.

Donny Walden of Towanda, Ill., claimed the night’s C-Main which transferred him to the night’s B-Main along with Derek Chandler, Austin Rettig, and Brent Kreke.

Tennessee native Dane Dacus claimed the B-Main over Jason McBride. Provisionals on the night were given to Kevin Weaver, Steve Sheppard Jr. and Terry English.
