Big Crowd, Fast Track Leads to Thrilling DIRTcar Nationals Opener at Volusia

DIRTcar NationalsBarberville, FL — A new track surface that was smooth and fast allowed O’Reilly Circuit of Champions Sprint Car Series and DIRTcar Racing UMP Modified drivers to showcase all of their talents on Wednesday night’s opener to the 39th Annual Florida DIRTcar Nationals By University of Northwestern Ohio at Volusia Speedway Park.

Craig Dollansky powered his way to a victory in the Sprint Car portion of the night, while Dave Hess Jr. broke the stranglehold on Volusia that UMP Modified racers Jared Landers and the Dillon brothers (Austin and Ty) had on the half-mile oval just west of Ormond Beach on S.R. 40.

Dollansky, a native of Elk River, Minn., driving for a team he assembled last November, posted the quickest lap of the night in time trials at 13.206 seconds, and then charged to the front in the A-main. He and Jason Sides battled until Sides actually slid in front before a caution waved. Under caution, Sides car appeared to have rear trouble and dropped out, leaving Dollansky to hold off Joey Saldana, Donny Schatz and Steve Kinser.

A green-white-checkerd finish cleared the path for Dollansky, who in 2007 and ’08 was the DIRTcar Nationals By UNOH champion.

“It was a great team effort with my brand new race team,” Dollansky said. “It is always a team effort when you make it to Victory Lane. I could not be happier for everyone involved. This was our first night running on the Goodyear Tires. Some other teams have tested, but we did not, so we are pretty happy that we could win on our first night with them. It is a great win for everyone who stands behind this team. We have a great support system.”

Hess turned in a similar performance to Dollansky’s. He was quick throughout the night, and when it was feature time, he was able to hold off a stout DIRTcar UMP Modified field.

“The track was real fast so I think everyone’s car felt great,” said Hess, of Waterford, Pa. “I didn’t want to look back, there were a lot of great cars throughout the field.”

Hess used a front row starting spot to stake his claim on the top spot just as University of Northwestern Ohio driver Todd Sherman went barrel-rolling up and along the Turn 3 wall. Sherman would walk away from the vicious wreck. Hess was strong on every restart, keeping the hard-charging superstars behind him over the final 19 laps.

“We’ve had real good cars, right out of the box,” Hess said. “I just hope we can keep everything going.”

The racing continues nightly at Volusia through Feb. 13. The All Star Circuit of Champions have one more night to go before the World of Outlaws invade on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. DIRTcar UMP Modifieds compete through next Tuesday when Dirt Late Models and Big-Block keep the action intense.
