DuQuoin, IL (September 7, 2010)-Shelby Miles of Bloomington, Indiana dominated the 17th Bill Oldani Memorial for UMP Modifieds Labor Day on the DuQuoin State Fair “Magic Mile” leading all 20 laps of the main event. Curt Rhodes of Taylorville, Illinois finished second with Jesse Snyder of Palestine, Illinois third, Bobby Regot of St. Peters, Missouri fourth and Bryan Higgerson of Pinckneyville, Illinois fifth.

Miles, the son of racing promoter Mike Miles, jumped into the lead from the outside of the front row and sailed past Tim Burdel for a lead he would never give up. Behind him the action was wild and wooly as three cautions and one red flag slowed and eventually stopped the action. Two-time winner Jeff Parks spun in turn four on the fifth lap but was able to pit and rejoin the action. On the restart Jeff Masson spun in turn four but was also able to continue, as was Steve Adams who made light contact with the turn one wall on lap 11.

Lap 14 saw perhaps the biggest wreck in DuQuoin modified history as seven cars tangled in turn three with Rick Sims rolling his machine. The action started when Benton’s Shane Cockrum (up to eighth from twenty-fifth) and Emmett Groves tangled in turn three with both hitting the wall. When the dust cleared Jeff Masson, Randy Myers, Chris Winters, Adams and Sims were all involved with Adams the only one able to continue. No one was injured in the melee.

Miles pulled away on the restart and ended up with a fair margin of victory at the checker. Thirteen cars were running at the end with twelve on the lead lap. Caution-free heat races were held on Sunday night in conjunction with the Ted Horn 100 and were won by Tim Burdel of DuQuoin, Miles and Rhodes with Miles setting a new modified track record for six laps of
109.218 miles an hour. Four-time winner Brian Shaw of Robinson had his car break on the last lap of his heat Sunday night and was unable to start Monday’s feature.
