Mr. DIRT Big-Block Billy Decker Tops DIRTcar NE Feature Win List

Weedsport, NYNovember 19, 2008 – By Tom Skibinski, DIRTcar Racing Northeast PR Director

The 33rd season for DIRTcar Racing Northeast competitors came to a close with 279 drivers scoring feature wins in Big-Block Modified, 358-Modified, Sportsman Modified, Pro Stock and Street Stock divisions at 34 different tracks, bringing the total open-wheel/full-fender count to 705 in 2008.

Eleven drivers took checkered flags in both Big-Block and Small-Block Modified main events, with Larry Wight also copping a Sportsman victory and Kenny Tremont and Martin Roy winning on both dirt and asphalt.

Southern Tier standout Billy Decker led all DIRTcar NE winners in the headline Big-Block Modified division, posting 22 feature wins at seven tracks around the Northeast. A tour record-tying 10 came in Advance Auto Parts Super DIRTcar Series competition en route to hid second overall Hoosier Tire Mr. DIRTcar Modified Championship. The ‘Franklin Flyer’ last topped the BB win chart in 1998, the same year as his initial Mr. DIRTcar crown, and his current count stands at 172 with another dozen victories registered in 358-Modified racing.

In 2008 local star H.J. Bunting III claimed the inaugural Advance Series event staged at Georgetown Speedway while eventual Mr. DIRTcar Sportstman champ Chris Raabe won the first race run at Brighton (Ont.) Speedway Park to bring the number of tracks to 79 hosting DIRTcar-sanctioned events since 1976.

Until last year only one other season ended with three drivers tied atop the final DIRTcar 358-Modified feature win chart. In 2008, ‘Mr. Small-Block’ Pete Bicknell was back and this time joined by fellow Canadians Danny O’Brien and Frenchman Kayle Robidoux with each reaching victory lane on seven occasions. Bicknell remains DIRTcar Northeast’s all-time 358-Modified win leader with 197 now in the recordbook, 19 of which have come following the Mr. DIRTcar 358-Modified Championship trail.

The ‘Teenage Tornado’ Raabe blew away his competition as he topped the DIRTcar Sportsman ranks with 19 sanctioned wins. With crate motors becoming more abundant in the Sportsman division circuit-wide, in 191 main events held at 18 tracks a whopping total of 84 drivers shared the spotlight including James Michael Friesen, who scored his first career feature win in May and ended the season standing second with 11. Raabe scored his first tour triumph on home soil at Brockville Ontario Speedway in his march to the coveted Mr. DIRTcar Sportsman Series points crown at the age of 17.

For the fourth straight season Western New York Pro Stock pilot Pete Stefanski paced the full-fender field and was also successful in his overall Mr. DIRTcar Pro Stock title defense for a second consecutive year. Not only did two-time Genesee Speedway champion Stefanski once again lead the DIRTcar Northeast circuit (12 wins), the Wheatfield, New York chauffeur emerged as the winningest driver in Mr. DIRTcar Pro Stock Series history now with 20 first-place trophies.

Dave Mannise continued his stronghold for a third successive season in Street Stock action, scoring a division-high 15 feature wins to remain DIRTcar’s all-time division leader. He nearly doubled the total of his nearest competition as Canandaigua Speedway high-point man Mike Welch stood second-best with eight. Second-ever Mr. DIRTcar Street Stock Series champion Nathan Peckham collected three checkered flags, although none were registered in the five extra-distance trail events.
