Chris Herbison wins a nail biter in DIRTcar Sportsman Modified Series finale at Brockville Ontario Speedway

Brad Rouse Crowned DIRTcar Sportsman Modified Series champion

BROCKVILLE, ONTARIO – Friday, October 18, 2013 – Martin Bélanger, DIRTcar Correspondent – With a last-lap pass, Chris Herbison took the lead and the victory Friday, Oct. 17, at Brockville Ontario Speedway in the last feature race of the DIRTcar Sportsman Modified Series.

Brockville Ontario local runners Jessica Power and Chris Herbison were on the top row as Herbison led the way to the green flag. Two laps were completed when Kevin Chagnon, slowing outside of turn 2, brought the first caution slowed. On the following green, Jon Mills grabbed the lead and Mathieu Desjardins was already making noise, jumping up to fourth place by lap 5.

The leaders got into heavy traffic with 10 laps completed. Nolan Swamp hit one of the white tractor tires in the infield and caution lights came back on in lap 11.

Mills led the way on the restart, but a burst of rain on lap 13 brought the field back to yellow as the field was sent to the pits to bring the track back to race-ready conditions. After the break, cars returned the speedway, the green flag waved, and Mills got the lead for another 2 laps. Several cars got together in turn 4 to bring the next caution of the race.

On the restart, Herbison, Ladouceur and Desjardins raced hard in turn 1 and got together with Desjardins having damage on the front end of his car. The Sorel, Quebec driver slowed in the backstretch and caution was out, ending his chase for the DIRTcar Sportsman Modified Series Championship.

Mills took the front again as Dany Gagne jumped to third on the following green. The leaders soon got to slower traffic, but Brian Copp stopped in the infield one lap shy of the halfway point and caution was out.

At the halfway point, Mills lead with Herbison, Gagne, Ladouceur and Steve Barber rounding out the top 5.

Martin Pelletier hit an infield tire in front of the grandstand with 20 laps to go, and the yellow flag waved.

Mills was strong off the restart as Dylan Evoy made his way to the top 5 and took to battling Gagne for third. Louie Jackson stopped in turn 2 with 14 laps to be completed.

On the following green, Gagne challenged Herbison for third, but slipped off the track to lose his strong third spot and another lap was completed with 37 in the books.

DIRTcar Sportsman Modified Series point leader, Brad Rouse, got together with another competitor, losing several positions and taking the opportunity of a lap 41 caution to head to the pits.

Leaders were running strong for position as Dylan Evoy, then running for third, hit Ladouceur as Evoy sustained frontend damage with only 7 laps to go.

Herbison was hot on Mills off the restart, and using the outside lane to make a pass on Mills on the final corner to win the event over the #84 car.

“I kept it wide open on the last corner,” said Herbison in the winner’s circle, “I would like to thank all my team for a great season.”

Joey Ladouceur finished third over Shane Pecore and Brian Comeau rounded out the top 5. Brad Rouse was declared the 2013 DIRTcar Sportsman Modified Series Championship.

The action continues for the DIRTcar Series at Brockville Ontario Speedway as the DIRTcar 358-Modified Series will hit the track Saturday, Oct. 19, for day 2 of the 1000 Islands RV Centre Falls Nationals. The Super DIRTcar Big-Block Modified Series rounds out the weekend Sunday, Oct. 20, with a 100-lap feature event.
