Top DIRTcar Sportsman Modified teams made their return appearance at Super DIRT Week on Friday afternoon and for the second straight year Sammy Reakes IV set fast time to win the pole position start for Saturday’s headline Town Mechanical 30 Championship at the New York State Fairgrounds.

Defending TMI 30 Champion Reakes posted a one-lap time of 33.508 sec. for an average speed of 107.437 mph around the Syracuse Mile and SDW rookie Matt Hulsizer was clocked at 33.639 sec. for the second best time. For his fast time among 56 entries, Reakes earned $500 from P & M Fabrication while Hulsizer collected the $250 Motorsports Safety Systems Outside-Pole Award bonus.

Hauling in from nearby Fulton, New York, Reakes carried on the family tradition at the Moody, once a favorite stop every year for his great uncle Sammy Reakes, himself a Northeast Modified Hall of Fame selection in 1994. Steering the no. 17K Whittaker Trophy Auto Sales-NAPA/Bicknell mount on Friday, 21 year-old Reakes IV also became the first driver to win the pole twice since the inception of the event in 1997. 2008 marked the first time crate motors were mandated during Super DIRT Week.

Drivers not qualifying through time trials will contend for six more spots in a pair of consolation round races on Saturday morning at 11:45am to complete the 30-car starting grid.
