Teenage sensation and current overall Hoosier Tire-VP Racing Fuels Mr. DIRTcar Sportsman Series point leader Tim Sears Jr. out of Clay, NY played the waiting game Saturday night at Rolling Wheels Raceway Park allowing the race track to come to him.

Sears started 11th and patiently worked his way forward. Then late in the going he blasted from third and into the lead on lap 30 before a late caution that set up a dramatic green-white-checkered flag finish. In the end, no one had anything for Sears as he picked up his fifth tour win in eight events run to date, including four of the last five Series stops.

“This car was awesome,” Sears said in victory for the second time this season at Rolling Wheels. “I was getting kind of annoyed with all the yellows. When the race got going, my car just kept getting better, so I guess it worked in my favor.”

Mark Chiddy, who led laps 26-29, finished second followed by two-time defending Mr. DIRTcar Champion Chris Raabe, Matt Hulsizer and Brandon Easey, who led the most laps on the night to place fifth.

Pole-sitter Chiddy and Jipp Ortiz led the 30-car starting field down to the green for the “Fan Fest 30” with Ortiz grabbing a narrow advantage early on the field. After a couple quick yellows, Ortiz built up a half straightaway lead by lap five. Chiddy and Dave Marcuccilli were in a tight battle for second and while Easey and Raabe ran a distant fourth and fifth.

Just when it looked like Ortiz would run away and hide in the early going, the Ransomville racer saw his three-second lead vanish as he had a right rear tire go flat on lap 10 sending him pit side for a quick tire change, handing the lead over to Easey on the ensuing restart. At the half way point lap 15 Easey was on cruise control out front looking for his first ever Rolling Wheels win. Behind the Canadian invader, Chiddy and Raabe ran within inches apart for second while Hulsizer and Sears showed in the top-five.

With 10 laps to go, Easey was still setting a quick pace out front as the laps clicked off. Chiddy, Raabe Sears and Hulsizer ran single file trying to run the leader down. After a caution period Chiddy took advantage of the outside on the restart as he blasted by Easey to be scored the new leader with only a handful of laps to go.

In the closing laps Chiddy, Raabe and Sears thrilled the fans running nose to tail and side by side putting the winner in doubt. Then just when it looked like Chiddy was heading for his first ever Series victory, Sears had other ideas. Running the extreme bottom of the speedway, Sears drove under both Rabbe and Chiddy exiting turn two on lap 30 to be scored the new leader just before a final yellow flag unfurled.

On the green-white-checkers finish, Sears pulled away easily and was the first across the line to post his 15th win of the year season. Late in the race when others were running the top and the middle, Sears made his moves forward using the bottom that ultimately got him the win.

“In the beginning of the race there was water on the bottom of the track,” Sears noted. “You couldn’t really go anywhere and kind of had to miss it. At the end the bottom started coming in where you could use it.”

When asked if he was starting to think about the Mr DIRTcar Sportsman Championship with just a few races left Sears said, “No I’m not thinking about it, I hate points racing, I just want to race to win.”

With the victory Sears extended his lead over Ryan Susice from 65 to 89 points. Susice had problems in the early going heading pitside yet did recover to finish sixth in the final run down.

The Mr. DIRTcar Sportsman Series gets back on track in six more days when Fulton Speedway kicks off the 25th Annual “Outlaw 200” Weekend on Friday, Oct.1, with top tour travelers chasing a $1,200 first-place prize in the 30-lap main event.
