Shawn Frost closed out the Hoosier Tire Mr. DIRTcar Championship Series portion of the 23rd Annual Schneider Bros. Weekend at Fulton Speedway on Saturday by leading all 30 laps to capture his first Street Stock tour event in convincing fashion.

Delayed by rain that inundated the high-banked 3/8-miler on Friday night, Frost was up to task the next day to outlast an all-star group of Central New York full-fender drivers and collect $500 in round three of the five-race Mr. DIRTcar Street Stock Championship trail.

“Just knew I had to stay up on the top and the car was going real good there,” remarked Frost, a stock car regular at Utica-Rome Speedway where he took four checkered flags en route to sixth-place finish in the final track point standings. “I saw the 272 and 90 cars down there a couple times but after a few laps I didn’t see anybody.”

“Was just trying to be smooth and not mess up. I actually hit the (uke) tire down low in turn one and the left-front (wheel) got right full of mud and started shaking real bad. It was kinda hard to drive at the end of the straightaway because my eyes were bouncing back and forth,” added Frost, after parking his no. 15 Frank’s Garage Special in victory lane to emerge as the third different winner in just as many series stops.

Nathan Peckham and Kevin Smith in the borrowed no. 272 ride from Tiger Chapman chased Frost across the line followed by new overall Mr. DIRTcar points leader Andy Fisk and Adam DePuy to fill out the front-five.

The heads-up start format after qualifying rounds set up the 30-car field on Friday before rain forced postponement until Saturday afternoon and resulted in three cars returning home. Although light showers on Saturday delayed the show nearly three hours, Frost was ready when the first green flag flew at 2:15 and out-dragged Peckham for the early lead. That initial circuit ended in a virtual dead-heat but after that it was Frost the remainder of the way as the Oneida, New York chauffeur staved off every challenge on five restarts to claim the decisive victory.

Canadian entry and Can-Am Motorsports Park regular Rob Perry lost the hood on his mount to incur the first caution period on lap five and Mike Vaughn stopped high in turn to force another slowdown on lap nine. The top-three of Frost, Peckham and Smith remained intact followed by Nick Rizzo and Chris Fisher when a flat tire caused Russ Marsden to come to a halt in turn one on lap 20.

Younger brother Ron Marsden was still in the hunt, however, and moved past Fisher for fifth on the ensuing restart. Frost opened up a comfortable five car-length lead with five to go as Marsden overtook Nick Rizzo for fourth and Peckham and Smith held their ground. Two late-race yellow flags flew for a pair of turn two incidents yet those only acted to delay the victory lane celebration as Frost was uncontested the remainder of the way.

The first slowdown on lap 29 included the number 27 cars with Bill Kowski ending up parked in the side of Dave Pope low in the second corner. On the second try, Marsden and Rizzo made contact resulting in Marsden’s no. 22 machine looping 180-degrees in turn two. Marsden waited for Rizzo to come back around and ran over his front end under caution to put an end to the race for each; Marsden was sent to the pits immediately after for unsportsmanlike conduct while Rizzo was directed to the rear of the field for his rough-riding role determined the lap prior.

The last lap 29 restart went off clean leaving Frost with a commanding four car-length lead as 20 of the 27 starters remained to see the final checkered flag.

Traveling teams return to competition in round four of the 2008 Mr. DIRTcar Street Stock Series when Cayuga County Fair Speedway hosts the next event on Friday, October 10 as part of the Super DIRT Week XXXVII festivities.
