Culminating with the headline Advance Auto Parts Super DIRTcar Series ‘Rite Aid 200’ on Sunday, October 12, the start of Super DIRT Week XXXVII at the New York State Fairgrounds in Syracuse is just 1 day away.
Commemorating the 10th straight season of Series partnership with Advance Auto Parts based in Roanoke, Virginia, 10 of the most famous cars ever to circle the Moody Mile during the Columbus Day speedfest will be highlighted —in numerical order— for each of the 10 days leading up to the richest Big-Block Modified event in the nation.
During the past 36 years no less than 407 drivers have qualified for the Rite Aid 200 starting grid, with only 18 able to tame the Moody Mile and capture the crown jewel of DIRTcar Modified Racing in the Northeast. More than half of the winners have gone on to repeat their victorious ride —often in a different car— while an elite group of just four were able to celebrate on no less than three occasions. Up to 10 of these same legendary wheelmen that have graced the fairgrounds winner’s circle are expected to compete in the 37th edition when the Salt City comes alive this October.
No better way to end the countdown than with the fourth and final Super DIRT Week triumph for Sunshine State speedster Gary Balough, one that may be the most memorable of all time as it forever changed the NYS Fairgrounds landscape. The 1980 fall classic was infiltrated by ground-effect cars then dominated by the notorious #112 Lincoln-bodied Modified built in Kenny Weld’s Indiana garage. In between, the black “Batmobile” eclipsed the former track time trials standard by more than two seconds and paced the field for a then unheard of 98 of 125 circuits even after making a mandatory pit stop on lap 72. And in the end, the DIRTcar rule book was even rewritten and today the revolutionary Continental Mark X/I sits in the Northeast Modified Hall of Fame adjacent to the Weedsport, New York headquarters for all to see and relive the magic of the Moody Mile.

Continuing to defy the laws of Syracuse, Billy Decker circled the muddied Moody Mile over the final 112 laps on just one tank of gas to claim his third Super DIRT Week Championship in 2001, then captured the 34th Rite Aid 200 Championship in ’05 marking the first time that the same race was run on two separate dates. With his fourth victory a first from the pole, Decker’s most recent triumph at the Fairgrounds oval aboard the LJL Racing no. 91 Gypsum Wholesalers entry was another record-setting performance by the Unadilla, New York pilot as he led the initial 105 circuits then the final 55 for an all-time record 160 laps in the autumn open-wheel extravaganza that was finally checkered in November.

Miami native Gary Balough staged the first of three consecutive dominating performances at Super DIRT Week in 1976. Taking full advantage of a concept way ahead of its time, the high-dollar no. 73 Ferraiuolo Bros.-owned Grant King-designed machine was one of the first assembly line cars —commonly accepted today— and equipped with Jim Kinsler’s exotic timed fuel injection system in the 496 cubic-inch powerplant. Among the most controversial competitors off the talented line of Florida racers that sought fame and fortune in the Northeast, Balough rang in a new era of DIRTcar Modified racing at the Syracuse Mile during the Bicentennial and injectors were outlawed and a 467ci motor limit was mandated the following year.

The Troyer name had been synonymous with success on pavement for years yet the purchase of a new Maynard Troyer-designed chassis by owner John Jackson put the no. 58 Jackson & Johnson Trucking ‘Mud Buss’ in the winner’s circle for the first time to open the 1980s in the biggest DIRTcar race. ‘Marvelous’ Merv Treichler not only captured the prestigious Schaefer 200 in 1981 in his seventh try, the popular Potato farmer from Sanborn, N.Y. claimed the Labor Day Championship on the same Syracuse Mile just one month earlier to resurrect his sliding career with the high-financed team and elevate Troyer to a new level of dominance in the Modified ranks. The team repeated the following year.

Popular Pennsylvanian Kenny Brightbill spent four weeks building a car for Delaware owner Eugene Mills, then dropped a Jack Tant motor in the no. 30 Blue Hen Racing Special before setting second fast time en route to winning the biggest race of his legendary career. In an era when customer-based manufactured cars have become the norm, victory 20 years ago in the Salt City showdown for the Sinking Spring, Pa. hotshoe was a throw-back to the early years of stock car racing on the Syracuse Mile. Ironically, Brightbill scored his only other Salt City victory in the first-ever race promoted at the New York State Fairgrounds by DIRT MotorSports founder Glenn Donnelly in 1972, then won the inaugural Super DIRT Week pole a month later.

Reading (Pa.) Fairgrounds Modified champion and USAC Sprint Car star Richard ‘Toby’ Tobias was the first Super DIRT Week winner to reach victory lane with a tube chassis car in 1975 and the trend has continued ever since. Tobias was always among the quickest around the Moody Mile and his fast time set 33 years ago in the blue no. 17 Mustang was the first of three straight pole-position prizes earned by the Lebanon, Pa. legend. On June 23, 1978 Tobias was killed in a one car sprint flip at the old Flemington (NJ) Fair Speedway at the age of 46 and the Syracuse fast time award has carried his name in memory from that day on.

Commemorating the 10th straight season of Series partnership with Advance Auto Parts based in Roanoke, Virginia, 10 of the most famous cars ever to circle the Moody Mile during the Columbus Day speedfest will be highlighted —in numerical order— for each of the 10 days leading up to the richest Big-Block Modified event in the nation.
During the past 36 years no less than 407 drivers have qualified for the Rite Aid 200 starting grid, with only 18 able to tame the Moody Mile and capture the crown jewel of DIRTcar Modified Racing in the Northeast. More than half of the winners have gone on to repeat their victorious ride —often in a different car— while an elite group of just four were able to celebrate on three other occasions. Up to 10 of these same legendary wheelmen that have graced the fairgrounds winner’s circle are expected to compete in the 37th edition when the Salt City comes alive this October.
Steering the ‘Experimental IV’ Troyer Chassis to a convincing victory in the Super DIRT Week XIII Big-Block finale, Jumpin’ Jack Johnson entered the history book as the first driver to sweep all four Modified main events on the Moody Mile in a single season. Back in 1984 the ‘Syracuse Slam’ was made up of a CRC Qualifier in July, the New York State Fair Labor Day Championship in September, CLM Winner’s Classic and Schaefer 200 in October. Teaming up with Troyer’s own Billy Colton, Johnson put the potent orange Hutter-powered no. 12A machine in the winner’s circle after setting fast time and leading 87 of the 125-lap distance to score his second title race win, keeping the trophy in the Empire State for the fourth straight October.

Renowned around the DIRTcar circuit for his pavement prowess, perennial favorite ‘Barefoot’ Bob McCreadie maxed out with his bag of aerodynamic tricks that carried the legendary no. 9 U.S. Linen Systems-Syracuse Frame Service Special into the winner’s for the only time in 1986. Avenging a late-race pit stop made the previous year in his Gremlin-bodied Kneisel creation, McCreadie locked up one of the most relieving of his 300+ DIRTcar Big-Block triumphs in the custom-built machine that has since become the exception on the Syracuse Mile rather than the rule.

Flanked by car owner Ray Bramall and the late Hall of Fame crew chief Charlie DeAngelis, the no. 6 Freightliner Trucks of Newburgh ride was an instant favorite whenever it signed up for the Super DIRT Week spectacle, emerging as the only car to carry two different drivers into the winner’s circle. DeAngelis first teamed with Bramall in 1986 and Brett Hearn became the driver of the renumbered ‘6’ Modifieds in 1988 before Danny Johnson filled the cockpit beginning in 1992. Hearn copped back-to-back Syracuse Big-Block titles in 1990-91 and DeAngelis returned to the Bramall garage in September of ’96, helping guide the team back to victory lane in the Salt City with Johnson buckled in the following autumn.

What better place to start then with the first car ever to park in victory lane at the conclusion of Super DIRT Week in 1972, the #00 Dover Brake Special piloted by the bespectacled Hall of Famer Buzzie Reutimann. The only coupe ever to crack the winner’s circle on Sunday, one of the most recognizable cars on DIRTcar Racing’s biggest stage was ironically the same mount that Reutimann drove on blacktop in the All-Star Racing League. Buzzie came back with the famous double-zero Modified to repeat his Syracuse triumph the following autumn, officially ending the ‘flathead’ era at the historic Salt City oval as the beginning of Super DIRT Week successfully completed the transition.
