Danny Johnson Charges To Edelweiss 358 Series Victory

Cantley, QUEJuly 1, 2010 – By Tom Skibinski, DIRTcar Racing Northeast PR Director

Danny Johnson has been winning up and down the Atlantic Coast for the past three decades. Thursday night the ‘Doctor’ charted new territory, putting on dazzling performance in French territory to score his first-ever victory at Autodrome Edelweiss in the headline Hoosier Tire-VP Racing Fuels Mr. DIRTcar 358-Modified Championship Series ‘Gauvreau Top Soil 100.’

Behind the wheel of owner Mike Payne’s potent Waste Management no. 27J Rochester Americans-Honeoye Auto Parts-Currier Plastics/Bicknell machine, Johnson charged from 22nd starting position to overtake race-long leader Pete Bicknell from Ontario, Canada then outdistance Frenchman Mario Clair to post his 54th career Small-Block Series triumph, worth $4,000 to the Rochester, N.Y. native.

“Pete’s pretty good, didn’t really think I was going to catch him,” remarked Johnson, 50, after leaving the province of Quebec atop the 358-Modified Series point standings following round two of the 12-race tour. “He got caught behind a few slow cars and I got some momentum up on the outside and I was able to get by him that way.”

An easy assessment of an otherwise hard-fought victory for Johnson, like Bicknell, a three-time overall Mr. DIRTcar 358-Modified Champion, although his last title came in 2000 while Pete captured his latest crown in ’08. Johnson was forced to qualify through the consolation round and his win placed him outside row 11 in the 32-car field to begin the 100-lap main event.

Just two yellow flags slowed the action, with Johnson carving his way through the pack to blast by Bicknell on lap 76 while Clair mirrored the move 13 circuits later before running out of time to complete late-race rally. Bicknell hung on for third followed by David Hebert, event sponsor Eric Gauvreau, Clement Therrien, Danny and Tim O’Brien, with Jean Boissonneault and American Dale Planck rounding out the Top-10.

Bicknell shot off from his pole-position start amidst a flurry of fireworks on Canada Day at the Cantley, Que. oval. Front row partner Bobby Herrington followed in line as did class rookie Luke Whitteker and Tim O’Brien, and that’s the way the leaderboard read over the initial 10 circuits.

Other than Johnson, who was mired deep in the pack and pulling off three-wide maneuvers from the outset, Danny O’Brien was the fastest among the front-runners as he cracked the front-five by lap 15. Following the first yellow flag on lap 21 for a turn one spin by second-generation driver Stephane LaFrance, O’Brien renewed his bid to track down Bicknell and was solidly in second with 30 laps complete.
Lap after lap the two BRP Chassis contended for the lead, Bicknell sticking low while O’Brien hung the Global Warranty machine up high looking for an even faster way around. Their dauntless duel was put on hold one more time when LaFrance ended up sideways between three and four, this time involving Denis Gauvreau on the lap 39 slowdown.

Back under green, Bicknell and O’Brien continued to hover ahead of the field, with Eric Gauvreau, Hebert and Clair in closest pursuit while Johnson lurked in the sixth position at the halfway mark. And 50 consecutive laps of non-stop action was the proper prescription for D.J. as he navigated the slick third-miler to perfection, gaining the most ground using the far inside of the track in his relentless charge forward.

O’Brien slipped past Bicknell for a short-lived lead on lap 53, yet even after Bicknell returned to the point the next circuit all eyes focused on Johnson as he cleared a path to the front. The ‘Doctor’ dropped Hebert to sixth on lap 58, dumped O’Brien back to fourth three laps later and grabbed second from Clair on lap 64. A half straightaway filled with traffic separated Bicknell from his newest pursuer, yet Johnson needed only a dozen circuits diminish the gap and sweep past Bicknell with still a quarter of the race still remaining.

“We chose to take the short way (low groove) around tonight,” added Johnson, who holds the record of eight straight 358-Modified Series wins set in 2000, the same year he established the all-time standard of 15 tour triumphs logged in a single season. “You could really maintain your momentum up higher but it was also real easy to slip up running the outside.”

“We were just working real good and the car was so good I could put it wherever I needed to go. Once I got ahead I was able to move back to the bottom, just had to hold my line and stay out of trouble after that,” said Johnson, a third-place finisher in the tour at Merrittville (Ont.) Speedway in May, to provide him a 15-point advantage over Bicknell in the current standings.

Settling into 11th on the initial start, Clair was content with a runner-up tally although he hinted that a longer race may have provided a far different outcome as his ResistO no. 22 Batiments JDL-Bert Transmission/Bicknell mount appeared to grow faster as the laps dwindled.

“We’re certainly happy with second, those are some valuable points toward the overall championship,” figured Clair, 37, who vaulted from 14th to third on the points chart looking to match his tour title garnered in 2007. “I think I’m in a good position now with some of the races coming closer to my home. I think if I had more laps tonight I could’ve caught the 27 car, maybe even get by if the timing was right.”

While Clair ended the night challenging for the top spot, Bicknell was relegated to holding onto the show position despite a dominant performance given three-quarters of the way.

“It’s a hard thing to do when you’re starting on the pole, just don’t know what kind of pace to go and don’t really know where everybody else is,” divulged Bicknell, 55, after chasing two of his own chassis across the line while Hebert, Gauvreau, Therrien, O’Brien, Boissonneault and Planck also sported designs by the internationally acclaimed St. Catharines, Ont. car builder. “You’re kind of a sitting duck, once they make their move and get by its pretty tough.”

“Once Danny was there I knew I’d be in trouble, he was so quick on the outside he could just pick up the throttle. I was a little loose coming off (turns) and that hurt me, same with Mario, he was much better coming off the corners than I was. At the start I wanted to make sure I saved the tires. In the end we just had a little too much gear and these guys had a little better set-up through the slick stuff than I did,” noted Bicknell, DIRTcar Racing Northeast’s all-time winningest 358-Modified driver with 208 features, including five in 2010.

Racing on the Mr. DIRTcar 358-Modified champ trail is off for the next two months before returning to the forefront in Canada over Labor Day Weekend with the traditional Small-Block Series stop at Cornwall Motor Speedway on Sunday, Sept. 5 for the third 100-lapper backed by Jiffy Auto Service.

SKIDMARKS
A stellar field of 38 Small-Block racers —16 drivers making their 2010 series debut— signed in Thursday at Edelweiss representing the host province of Quebec, neighboring Ontario and bordering United States. Easily the greatest car count of the season at Serge Lagace’s wide third-miler nestled in the hilltops of the Ottawa suburb of Cantley, 15 was the top total reached previously this season in the predominantly French-speaking territory. With the grandstand seating capacity of 3,500 on the verge of being filled by feature time, the 18th tour event staged at Edelweiss provided a top-notch performance with 100 laps run off in just 30 minutes as only two caution periods slowed the action..

Despite failing to declare his intentions at the start of the new decade, Pete Bicknell was at it again as the No. 42 Lucas Oil Products entry powered by an Engine Research & Development speedplant made the 9-hour (7 before bad directions) haul from its garage in the Niagara Frontier. “Just went out to grab a bite to eat and ended up here,” smiled Bicknell, the veteran three-time Mr. DIRTcar 358 titlist with 19 career tour victories (5th all-time) tucked neatly under the Merrittville Speedway owner’s belt. “We’ve got a lot of our cars here tonight, its always good to deal direct with your customers when you get a chance.” ‘Mr. Small-Block’ was quick out of the box, posting fast time and copping his heat before grabbing the pole in the customary pre-race draw. The feature provided a similar story until Johnson spoiled Pete’s parade with a dramatic rally from the rear of the field.

On the other end of the Series spectrum was first-year tour follower Travis Braun from Jordan Station, Ont., who was 29th fastest in Bilstein Time Trials before a 3rd-place finish in the consi lined up his Biedas Powersports no. 76 Brian’s Tire Repair-DBN Drywall/Bicknell machine 26th on the 32-car grid. “This is a real learning experience for us this year, haven’t even raced at half the tracks on tour so we’re really just getting our feet wet,” remarked Braun, 26, another Merrittville regular who worked his way through the DIRTcar Sportsman Modified ranks. “My wife is on maternity leave this year so it’s a good time to take advantage.

Along with his maiden voyage to Edelweiss where he ran all 100 laps to finish 18th, new to Braun in ’10 will be series stops at Granby and Drummond in Quebec, along with Brockville Ontario Speedway and Mohawk Int’l Raceway in New York. Tagging along all summer will be his wife Alicia and baby son Carter, who was born in April of this year. Alicia was crowned Merrittville’s go-cart champion in 2009, ending a whirlwind season highlighted by nine feature wins.

POT HOLES: Vermont invader Todd Stone suffered a broken oil pump in hot laps and was the lone car unable turn any competitive laps during the night … Third-generation standout Stewart Friesen missed qualifying in both the heat and consolation round as the team replaced a harmonic balancer that broke while the Kendrick Racing no. 6* Global Warranty/Bicknell mount parked in line waiting for his heat. Edelweiss regular and program sponsor Eric Gauvreau provided a new part for a minimal fee, helping Friesen land a 17th-place finish after starting 30th … A moment of silence was spent prior to the feature start for DIRTcar 358-Modified and Pro Stock driver Mitchell Jock who passed away on Wednesday at the age of 27. A tragic year already for the north country community as fellow Akwesasne, N.Y. racer Mark Smoke lost his life in March after a car accident at the age of 38. Teenager Kristian Smoke is now following in his father’s tire tracks enjoying his rookie season at Mohawk Int’l Raceway back in the states … Prior to qualifying run, three separate cloudbursts sent teams ducking for cover inside their haulers yet by race time skies cleared and temperatures in the 50s prevailed once the sun went over the horizon.
