WHAT TO WATCH FOR: DIRTcar Sportsman Championship Series Returns to Land of Legends For Gerald Haers Memorial

Gavin Eisele

A visit to the Finger Lakes awaits the DIRTcar Sportsman Championship Series as the battle for the 2024 title continues.

The Series stops at Land of Legends Raceway on Saturday, Sept. 14, for a 40-lap battle paying $2,000-to-win.

Bonuses will also be available throughout the race.

Joining the DIRTcar Sportsman are the DIRTcar Big Block Modifieds who will battle for $10,000-to-win.

If you can’t make it to the track, you can watch all of the Super DIRTcar Series action on DIRTVision, either online or with the DIRTVision app.

Here’s a look at what to watch for at Land of Legends:

2 Horse Race: With five points-paying races remaining, Cody McPherson and Gavin Eisele have emerged as the top two contenders for the 2024 title.

Both have reached Victory Lane in the championship season. Eisele scored wins at Glen Ridge Motorsports Park and Fulton Speedway, while McPherson defended home turf with a victory at Ransomville.

In the last two races, Eisele cut McPherson’s points lead to 13 points with a second at Weedsport Speedway and sixth at Can-Am Speedway. And while it wasn’t a Series event last year, Eisele is the defending winner of the Sportsman portion of the Gerald Haers Memorial.

McPherson finished 11th in the championship season stop at Land of Legends in 2023.

The Battle For 3rd: While Eisele and McPherson battle for the top spot, Land of Legends track regulars Zach Sobotka and Nick Root are battling for third.

The two drivers are separated by five points in the Series standings entering this weekend.

Both drivers had two wins in 10 starts at the Canandaigua, NY, track this season, with Sobotka holding the advantage in the track’s point standings. However, Root won when the DIRTcar Sportsman Series Central Region visited the track in July.

Sobotka is searching for his 10th career Series win after earning a Central Region triumph at Fulton Speedway.

A Stout Group: Along with Sobotka and Root, Land of Legends has a stout field of weekly competitors aiming for the $2,000 prize.

At the top of that list is the Guererri family.

Matt Guererri had the most successful season of the three, earning a victory, five top fives, and 10 top 10s in 10 starts. Frank Guererri Jr. and Paul Guererri went winless on the season but finished fourth and fifth in the track standings. Frank had four top fives and eight top 10s, while Paul had two top fives and six top 10s.

Paul Guererri is the all-time winningest driver in Land of Legends history with 44 wins—his last coming in 2019.

Other drivers to watch who’ve reached Victory Lane at the track in 2024 are Tyler Corcoran, Tim Lafler, Kasey Coffey, Kevin Ridley, and Nick Cooper.
