Defending series champion starts season off right with win over Jocelyn Roy, George Renaud
CORNWALL, ONTARIO – Sunday, June 1st, 2014 – Martin Bélanger, DIRTcar Correspondent – A beautiful Sunday evening greeted Pro-Stock racers for the division’s inaugural DIRTcar Series event of 2014. A fine field of drivers made the haul to Cornwall Motor Speedway for the Jiffy Auto Service 50 Sunday, June 1. Defending Series champion Dave Bissonnette did not waste time, grabbing his first career series feature win to start off 2014 right.
The 50-lap DIRTcar Pro-Stock feature saw PJ Peters and Jocelyn Roy lead the field of 22 cars to green as Jocelyn Roy claimed the initial lead. One lap was completed when Luke Horning stopped in turn 4 to bring the first caution of the race.
Roy had Peters on his bumper with 5 laps completed as Rosco Garreau and George Renaud had a good fight for third with Stephane Lebrun cracking the front five. Renaud was running strong using the bottom and grabbed the lead on lap 12, but Roy took it back in lap 14.
Roy pulled away from the field with 20 laps in the books. Defending series champion Dave Bissonnette made his way to fifth on lap 23. The caution was out at the halfway point with Roy still the leader over Renaud, Peters, Bissonnette and Stephane Lemire
On the restart, Bissonnette having a great start pulling up to second and started challenging Roy for the top spot. Bissonnette was able to take first place on lap 30 over Roy. The leader got to slower cars with 13 laps to go. Luke Horning got the field together as he stopped in turn 4 with 40 laps completed.
Bissonnette had a strong start while Renaud was battling hard to pass Roy for second with 5 laps remaining. Bissonnette led the final portion to capture his first career win in the DIRTcar Pro-Stock Series over Roy and.
“I saw that Jocelyn struggled a little on the high side and decided to try the bottom and it worked,” said Bissonnette on his strategy to take the lead over Roy. The 2013 Series champion was pretty humble in the winner’s circle: “I need to thank all my sponsors especially Marc Roy, who has brought our team to another level since he joined us last year.”
The Pro-Stock will travel to the province of Quebec for a doubleheader on Friday, June 20 at Autodrome Granby and the following night at RPM Speedway located in St-Marcel, Quebec.
