2009 marked the 15th season that DIRTcar Racing offered an overall Hoosier Tire-VP Racing Fuels Mr. DIRTcar Pro Stock Championship yet it produced an ending identical to the past three with Pete Stefanski continuing his stronghold in the Northeast region. The latest title run by just 13 points aboard the no. 2 Sunrise Racing-SanTer Sewing-PJ NFB Auto Sales/Chevrolet Monte Carlo EMS entry was the closest ever as the Wheatfield, N.Y. pilot needed seven Top-5 finishes in nine extra-distance events to seal the deal. The Canandaigua-Genesee ‘Terrell’s Drivin’ Route 5’ champion earned an unparalleled fourth straight Mr. DIRTcar crown, opening the tour with a last-lap victory at Genesee, winning with two to go at Mohawk Int’l Raceway just two weeks later, then leading all 25 laps to add his first career triumph at the Syracuse Mile during Super DIRT Week in October. Stefanski ended the ’09 campaign registering 10 feature wins at five tracks to retain his position as DIRTcar Racing Northeast’s all-time career win leader with 88 in the Pro Stock ranks, including a series-best 23 in the new millennium.

Second-generation standout Joey Ladouceur did everything he could to collect a 2nd career crown, yet the 2004 overall Mr. DIRTcar champion still fell a baker’s dozen back in the final point standings. The Alexandria, Ont. ace posted a season-best five tour triumphs, missing the Top-10 just twice at nine series stops, while garnering six Xtreme Lubricants Fast Time awards in the final seven events. The potent Coffrage 20-20 no. 92 Minimax Express/Cadillac STS Stinger X chauffeur was just as successful in the weekly wars throughout the summer, capturing a fourth track title at Cornwall Motor Speedway en route to racking up a division-best 15 feature wins in 2009, elevating his DIRTcar career total to 72 victories which is second all-time.

Continuing to improve on DIRTcar Northeast’s premier full-fender circuit, P.J. Peters from Akwesasne, Que. climbed into 3rd-place as a result of seven Top-10s, with a season-best third tallied at Mohawk Int’l in July followed by fourth at Autodrome Edelweiss after Labor Day. Peters also set the first Xtreme Fast Time of the season at Mohawk, figuring 7th in the final standings at Cornwall with one victory while buckled into his familiar Sunrise Racing no. 73 Hair Secrets Salon/Chevrolet Impala JACR ride.

Don Carlson from Ridgefield, Conn. towed his Benziger Winery no. 26 Brute Men’s Care Products/Dodge Charger EMS machine to every series show for a second straight season, figuring in fourth position on the Hoosier-VP Mr. DIRTcar points chart. Taking advantage of his home track experience on the high banks in September, ‘Big Daddy’ grabbed top honors in the tour’s return to Lebanon Valley Speedway where he finished 19th in the season standings. Securing runner-up accolades in last year’s Mr. DIRTcar points chase, the ‘07 Super DIRT Week Pro Stock champ also nailed down 2nd-place in the autumn showdown at Rolling Wheels Raceway and third at Cornwall in July.

‘06 Motorsports Safety Systems Rookie of the Year Dion Oakes from Akwesasne, N.Y. rounded out the Top-5 in Mr. DIRTcar Championship points, posting six Top-10 tallies on tour including a third-place best in the series finale at Brockville Ontario Speedway. Finishing the season third in points at Cornwall, where he logged his lone win of ’09, Oakes also steered the Oakes Racing no. 48 Noah King Family-backed Chevrolet Impala Cannizzaro mount to fourth in points at Mohawk during 2009.

Already a 3-time series race winner at Lebanon Valley —21st in ’09 points, 1 win— where he posted a tour-best 3rd-place finish, full-fender veteran Rob Yetman made a successful debut in Hoosier-VP Racing Fuels Mr. DIRTcar Championship competition claiming sixth in the final points column. The Castleton, N.Y. chauffeur matched his third-place tally at Autodrome Drummond earlier in the summer, with a final top-five earned in his maiden voyage to Brockville in October aboard the Lazzaro’s Auto Body no. 7 Madsen Overhead Door/Pontiac Grand Prix sporting a JCR frame.

Utilizing Drummond (5th) as his weekly stop for bonus points in 2009, all-time Autodrome Edelweiss DIRTcar Pro Stock winner Stephane Lebrun from Gatineau, Que. finished 7th in Mr. DIRTcar with four Top-10s, including 3rd-place highs at Edelweiss and the Genesee lid-lifter. Racking up 30 DIRTcar wins since 2002, Lebrun was recognized in ’09 strapped into the Patio Vidal Restaurant no. 6 United Auto Parts(UAP)/Pontiac Grand Prix Wild Thing making frequent visits on both sides of the border.

A familiar face in Canadian territory, long-time full-fender racer Dave Bissonnette from Apple Hill, Ont. sought further success in the states missing just one series show to wind up eighth in his second-ever Mr. DIRTcar Championship run. Finding his way into 4th-place during the ’07 overall points hunt, ‘Bulldog’ finished half the eight events that he qualified for among the Top-10, with the no. 47 Totem Pole Novelties/Chevrolet Monte Carlo Cannizzaro car shadowing the winner across the line when the curtain dropped on the inaugural DIRTcar NE Fall Nationals at Brockville last October.

Once again buckled in behind the wheel of the Home Hardware no. 4 OK Tire-Alain Beaupres Construction/Chevrolet Monte Carlo Cannizzaro entry, hard luck driver Roch Aubin placed among the Top-15 (9th) in DIRTcar points for a fifth straight year. Hitting all nine tour events from early July through mid-October, the Alexandria, Ont. traveler netted series-high finishes of 7th at Mohawk and 10th at Drummond, for the second successive season settling into 6th-place on the final points chart at his Sunday night home in Cornwall.

Fresh off his signature Super DIRT Week win the previous autumn on the Syracuse Mile, Sean Corr made his series debut in 2009 rounding out the Top-10 in the overall Hoosier-VP point standings scoring his only Top-Five (5th-place) in the Fourth of July series send off at Genesee Speedway. Sharing time on the asphalt in the ARCA Re/Max Series (13th at both Pocono Raceway and Chicagoland Speedway) and Camping World East Series (16th at Thompson (CT) Speedway), the Goshen, N.Y. speedster missed just one Pro Stock series stop wheeling The Trans Group no. 8 Northeast Fabricators/Pontiac Grand Prix EMS, adding a 10th-place finish at the BOS.

Still hailed as one of the fastest full-fender men on the Syracuse Mile after logging a Pro Stock single-lap record time in excess of 100mph during Super DIRT Week ’06 qualifying, Louie Jackson finished 11th in the final Mr. DIRTcar Championship where he has been a staple for the past half-dozen seasons. Hauling the Adams Marina no. 18 Action Race Parts-C&B Enterprises/Chevrolet Monte Carlo Black Widow race machine in 2009, Jackson placed among the Top-10 on two occasions in Canada and the U.S., coming home 7th at Cornwall and 8th at Genesee.

His third season contending on tour was easily the best as David Papineau claimed the final point fund payoff spot by finishing 12th in the ’09 overall Hoosier Tire-VP Racing Fuels Mr. DIRTcar standings. The Akwesasne, N.Y. driver missed qualifying his D&D Construction no. 188 Action Race Parts-Team Papi/Chevrolet Monte Carlo Cannizzaro ride for just the lead-off champ trail event at Genesee, scoring his only Top-10 tour finish in the crown jewel BNC Motorsports Pro Stock Championship on the Moody Mile when he crossed the line sixth to close out Super DIRT Week.

Can-Am Motorsports Park kicks off the 2010 Hoosier Tire-VP Racing Fuels Mr. DIRTcar Championship with the first round of the Pro Stock Series slated for Sunday, April 18.
