DIRTcar Racing Northeast Weekly Points Update: July 20

Weedsport, NYJuly 22, 2010 – By Tom Skibinski, DIRTcar Racing Northeast PR Director

Super DIRTcar Series point chasers get a much deserved two week break from tour competition while Hoosier Tire-VP Racing Fuels Mr. DIRTcar Championship contenders in the 358-Modified, Sportsman Modified and Pro Stock ranks get a much longer time off.

Two wins and a pair of seconds by Matt Sheppard during a six-day stretch vaulted the Waterloo, N.Y. driver to the top of the SDS points chart for the second time this season, leaving Billy Decker and Jimmy Phelps tied for second following All-Star Week in Central New York and the ‘Great Canadian Tour’ of Quebec at autodromes Granby and Drummond. A return to Canada and Merrittville Speedway in the province of Ontario highlights the next Series stop when the 18th Annual Bob St. Amand Sr. Memorial 100 takes center stage Aug. 2.

While Dave Marcuccilli captured the ‘All-Star 30’ Sportsman title event at Cayuga County Fair Speedway last weekend, a fourth-place tally by Ransomville’s Ryan Susice extended his lead over top challengers Steve Gray (3rd at CCFS) and Tim Sears Jr. (2nd). The talented trio gets back on track for rounds number four, five and six at Ransomville Speedway, Merrittville Speedway and Humberstone Speedway, Sept. 10-12.

Two races into the 2010 tour, American Danny Johnson leads past Mr. DIRTcar champions Pete Bicknell from St. Catharines, Ont. and Mario Clair from St-Edmond, Que. as they await the return to Series action the first weekend of September at Cornwall Motor Speedway.

Pro Stockers resume activity in late August and points leader Louie Jackson is looking to put his hometrack advantage to good use when Mohawk Int’l Raceway doubles up with a World of Outlaws Late Model Series stop on Aug. 21.

The season-long regional point chases continue around the DIRTcar Northeast circuit as open-wheel teams gear up for the second half of the 2010 campaign. A note that any competitor not purchasing a DIRTcar License by the July 15 cut-off date has been dropped from all weekly point tabulations.

‘Super Matt’ Sheppard’s recent success has elevated the second-generation standout into a tie with Jimmy Phelps in the Central Region standings, as Sheppard is now listed highest with 12 wins and Phelps is right behind with 11. All-time DIRTcar NE Modified winner Brett Hearn tops the Eastern Region points chart while perennial BRP title contender Jeremiah Shingledecker, who ventured north for All-Star Weekend II in Weedsport, continues to set the pace out West.

The Small-Block ranks have shown the most stability during the year with Tim O’Brien heading the DIRTcar 358-Modified Northern Region point standings and Pete Bicknell topping the Western Region chart. Stephane LaFrance has used a division-high seven wins to close the gap on O’Brien while Bicknell remains in command ahead of Chad Brachmann, the only other regional leader in the Niagara Frontier this season.

Enjoying his most productive year to date, Sportsman sensation Chris Raabe has locked up at least a share of the Northern division points crown with a DIRTcar NE best count of 19 feature wins. Tony Farone leads D.J. Brundige in the Eastern standings while top touring prospects Ryan Susice (Western) and Steve Gray (Central) in the overall Hoosier-VP Racing Fuels Mr. DIRTcar Championship set the pace in their own weekend title bids.
