CHOMPED THE CHAMP: Caudell Passes Defending Champion Jackson Late to Win at Bristol

Cruise Caudell made it three first-time winners in three races to open up Season 5 for the DIRTcar eSports Street Stock League Wednesday night, passing defending champion Tyler Jackson in the closing laps to take the lead and the $100 victory at iRacing’s dirt-covered Bristol Motor Speedway.

Caudell, the House of Speed team driver from Hiawassee, GA, asserted his dominance around the half-mile throughout the two-round program, winning the first Preliminary Round Feature over Grady Ehrman and Daniel Stiffler and leading the transfer cars into the Final Round.

After turning the second-fastest lap in Qualifying, Caudell tucked-in behind polesitter Jackson through the opening circuits and nearly made the pass for the lead on him on Lap 6, but was forced back to second after an untimely caution flag was displayed before the leaders came back around to complete the lap.

“I thought I had gotten around him there for a little bit, and right when I was door-to-door with him, the caution came out and my heart sunk,” Caudell said. “Luckily, we were able to pull it off and come out with the win.”

Jackson led the field around for the next 13 laps and multiple restarts before Caudell was able to threaten for the lead again, which he did on Lap 19. Using the extreme low side of the banking, Caudell was able to dig-in underneath Jackson and nose ahead for the position at the start/finish line to take the lead, and soon after his first career DIRTcar eSports Feature victory.

THUNDER VALLEY THROWDOWN: Jared Triumphs in Brutal Street Stock Race at Bristol

Two drivers disqualified in rough-and-tumble League debut at famed half-mile

It indeed was Bristol, baby.

After 20 long, grueling laps around the high banks of Bristol Motor Speedway, Kyle Jared, of Cedar Rapids, IA, managed to dethrone the top-two in Chevy Performance Street Stock League points in the final laps to score his first career win with DIRTcar eSports.

Jared became the third different winner in three weeks with the League, however, this one may have been the most exciting run to the checkers yet.

Fast qualifier and polesitter Charles Barnes, the lone Team No Love entrant from Benton, AR, led the opening laps with all 23 of his opponents behind him, beating and banging on each other for position as the laps clicked off and the caution flags flew.

Multiple wrecks toward the middle-rear of the pack sent several cars to pit lane during the race, including an incident under yellow that sent at least seven drivers either into the wall or into an innocent bystander. Bobby Rafferty, the League’s most recent winner at Limaland, was hit with a slew of incident points that disqualified him from the race in a later incident.

Defending League champion Tyler Jackson broke his way into the podium on Lap 6 and took the lead from Barnes after a restart three laps later. His lead wouldn’t last, though, as he and Jared began swapping slide-jobs for the lead on Lap 15. Jared barely beat Jackson to the line after a crossover move coming out of Turn 4, giving him control of the race from there on out.

But the race wasn’t over there. From the depths of the second Last Chance Showdown, Aussie competitor Sean Stevens climbed all the way from 14th on the starting grid and was breathing down the leaders’ necks inside of five-to-go. With him went Bailey Hipp, the runner-up at Limaland from Tryon, NC, making it a four-car battle for the lead.

When a final caution flag with three laps remaining restacked the field, the tempers reached a boiling point. Hipp got into Turn 1 too hard and got into the rear of Stevens, sending him around into the outside wall, doing a great bit of damage to his E1 SimRacing #26. Stevens immediately retaliated, running into the back of Hipp under caution, disqualifying him from the event.

The field took the green for the final time, and Jackson made a beeline for the lead. He tried the low groove in Turn 1, but Jared moved down to block, giving him the space he needed to bring the field back around to the checkers. Barnes assumed the top lane and drove around Jackson in Turns 3-4, beating him to the line by just under a second.

THUNDER VALLEY THROWDOWN: Seay Leads Flag-to-Flag in Tour UMP Modified Action at Bristol

Seay’s fourth career Tour victory ties him with Alex Bergeron for most all-time

He’s been in Victory Lane with his Summit Racing Equipment UMP Modified on DIRTVision before, and now he’s done it again. With his fourth career victory aboard the DIRTcar eSports Tour Wednesday night at the virtual Bristol Motor Speedway, Evan Seay now sits tied for the most Feature wins in Tour history.

Grabbing the lead at the drop of the green, Seay, of Chesnee, SC, pulled out to a big advantage over his competition early, turning the fastest lap of the race on Lap 2. It wasn’t until the halfway mark passed before Seay received his first challenge from a hard-charging Dylan Yeager, who started on the front row but had fallen all the way back to ninth on the initial start.

Yeager, of Hamilton, NJ, immediately hit the high side and began making up spots rapidly, reaching the runner-up spot by Lap 12. He then used that momentum to track down leader Seay as he approached lapped traffic.

“I told myself I was going to stick to the bottom the first few laps, and it ended up working out and getting me the lead. But all of a sudden, it just slowed way down a ton on the bottom about eight laps in. [Yeager] basically just caught me just running the top – the top was that much faster,” Seay said.

But a few costly mistakes on the treacherous high side of Bristol broke Yeager’s momentum on multiple occasions, giving Seay the edge he needed to pull away.

“As my dad always says, I race better when I’m pissed off, so I got up on the wheel and drove back up to P2,” Yeager said. “I was running down Evan at the end and then I started messing up and hitting the wall.”

Seay turned on the jets in the home stretch and brought home the $250 payday on cruise control.  With an eighth-place finish last week with the Big Block Modifieds at Weedsport, Seay now sits inside the top-five of the points standings.

Defending Tour champion Kendal Tucker, of Mount Airy, NC, made his first appearance of the season Wednesday night and had a solid run going, tracking down Yeager in the final laps and making the pass in traffic to clinch a runner-up finish.

With all of the back-and-forth, ups-and-downs Yeager had over the 40-lap contest, it’s no surprise he was almost relieved to see the checkered fly by race’s end.

“I think that’s the first time I’ve ever sweated in a sim race before,” Yeager said.

The DIRTcar eSports Tour action continues next Wednesday night, April 7, with Round 3 of action at the Williams Grove Speedway. The Super DIRTcar Series Big Block Modifieds will be the vehicle of choice – catch all of the action live in the iRacing server or on DIRTVision at 8pm ET.
