Grayville, IL — Rusty Schlenk (Super Late Models) and Kent Robinson (Modifieds) head into this weekend’s UMP DIRTcar Racing action riding high after moving to the top of their respective division’s national points standings.
Schlenk, 22, of Jackson, Mich., regained the Super Late Model national points lead that he had lost to Jason McBride of Carbondale, Ill., one week earlier. In the weekly points tabulated through May 6, Schlenk appeared atop the standings by 53 points (667-614) over McBride.
A talented and busy young driver who has made no secret of his desire to challenge for the UMP DIRTcar national points title, Schlenk ran two UMP DIRTcar-sanctioned events last weekend. His best finish was a second on May 2 at Oakshade Raceway in Wauseon, Ohio, which drew a whopping 51-car Super Late Model field.
Robinson, 21, of Bloomington, Ind., assumed command of the Modified national points lead from Randle Sweeney of Clifty, Ky., a veteran racer who had paced the standings throughout the first month of 2009 points racing.
An Indiana University student who has quickly become a force in the Midwest’s UMP DIRTcar Modified ranks, Robinson made two sanctioned starts last weekend. He finished third on May 2 at Kamp Motor Speedway in Boswell, Ind., and second on May 3 at Kokomo (Ind.) Speedway.
Other UMP DIRTcar national points leaders include defending Pro Late Model division champ Tait Davenport of West Paducah, Ky.; Clayton Perry of North Vernon, Ind. (Sportsman); Chris Buhler of Baton Rouge, La. (Limited Modifieds); Dave Mannise of Fulton, N.Y. (Stock Cars); Mickey Hines of Seymour, Ind. (Factory Stocks); and Danny Lunn of Altoona, Fla. (4-Cylinders). Mannise is the only driver from the six support divisions who is new to the top of the points standings this week.
