Coming to a climax with the headline ‘Hall of Fame Classic 100’ on May 30, the Memorial Day Weekend Super DIRTcar Series showdown on the Cayuga County Fairgrounds is just 8 days away. The historic Weedsport, New York speedway comes to life for the traditional holiday special with the 100-lap Big-Block Modified winner on Sunday waiting to take home a cool $6,000 top prize.
Helping commemorate the past two decades of Hall of Fame happenings at the home of DIRTcar Northeast, highlights from many of the past induction days will be recalled in anticipation of the first big holiday racing event of the season.
With such a star-studded line-up secured for the inaugural inductions to the Northeast Modified Hall of Fame in 1992, the second year seemed a challenge for the selection committee until the Class of ’93 was announced. Making room for their portrait on the Wall of Fame were local favorite, ‘Wee’ Willie Allan, north country standout Guy ‘Shorty’ Robinson, Fonda legends Lou ‘Monk’ Lazzaro and ‘The Shoe’ Kenny Shoemaker, Lebanon Valley pioneer Doug Garrison, and popular Pennsylvanians ‘Old Bones’ Dave Kneisel, Bobby Gerhart and Alan ‘Rags’ Carter. The second annual tribute to the pioneers of Northeastern racing was also highlighted by the creation of the Lenny J. Sammons Outstanding Contribution To Motorsports Award, in 1993 handed out to Southern Ontario driver/owner/mechanic Ray Stevens for 40 years of service to motorsports. Future Hall of Famer Dave Lape went on to capture the 2nd Hall of Fame Classic, the only other time it was held in conjunction with Cayuga County’s traditional April season-opener.
